HOUSTON, TX – An FFA exhibitor from Sterling City over the weekend came in second at the Houston livestock show.
Tristan Hines, 18, of Sterling City, won the Reserve Grand Champion Steer and breed champion. In return for his victory, Hines won a whopping $540,000. The steer was purchased by the Champagne Cowgirls.
Hines is not the first in his family to win the biggest rodeo in Texas.
“Hines and his steer, Astro, join a family tradition of success at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo,” Rodeo officials reported in a news release. “Hines’ mother won grand champion Steer in 1984, and his first cousins won grand champion Steer in 2005 and 2014.”
Despite winning the $540,000, Hines will only take home the capped amount of around $40,0000. The rest of the money raised will go back into the Rodeo Houston scholarship fund.

So the young man "wins" $540,000 but only receives about 7 1/2%. Sounds like a rip-off to me. I'd like to see what goes into and out of, that scholarship fund, and who is receiving it. For achieving this huge win, he should take home at least half.

Who do you think should not be eligible for the scholarship?

Permalink40K is approximately 7 1/2% of 540,000. I still think the kid should get a lot more.
