Winter Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Street Flooding & Near Freezing Temps to Drench Concho Valley

SAN ANGELO – A strong frontal system will blow into the Concho Valley late Monday night bringing heavy rain and gusty winds followed by freezing temperatures Tuesday night which could cause headaches for drivers midweek.  

Portions of the Big Country north of Abilene will see freezing rain and possibly snow Tuesday. 

According to the National Weather Service office in San Angelo, a Pacific cold front will pass through the area around midnight Monday night with very cold rain starting around 3 a.m.  Temperatures will be in the upper 30s so no frozen precipitation is anticipated in the San Angelo area at this time.  Winds will be northwesterly at 15 to 20 mph and gusting to 30 mph so there will be a wind chill to making it feel colder.  There is an 80% chance of rain Monday night. 

Meteorologists anticipate up to an inch of rain Monday night with additional amounts throughout the day Tuesday.  That will cause minor street flooding at times region wide.  

By Tuesday, the afternoon high temperature will only reach 42 degrees with a 90% chance of continued rain.  It will be cold but above freezing.  

Tuesday night temperatures will drop below freezing and any moisture left over on roadways, especially in the northern counties, will freeze causing hazardous driving conditions on bridges and overpasses.  

Temperatures will remain very cold though out the rest of the week.  

This is a dynamic weather system and timing the arrival of the precipitation is uncertain.
