The San Angelo Police Department has identified the man suspected of murdering a 5-year-old child early Tuesday morning in the 2700 block of Houston St.
Isidro De La Cruz, 23, was booked into the Tom Green County jail early Tuesday morning, following an assault during which he is accused of fatally injuring a 5-year-old girl. The child succumbed to her injuries Tuesday morning.
The litle girl's mother was also injured in the assault, however police have reported that her injuries were not life-threatening. Both she and her daughter were transported to a local hospital after police responded to the scene of the crime at around 2:30 this morning.
The investigation is ongoing and so far, details surrounding the domestic-dispute-turned-murder have not been released, however SAPD Chief Tim Vasquez will be holding a press conference this afternoon.
At this point, the only information that has been released is that police initially responded to a domestic disturbance call at 2:31 a.m., then received a second call regarding an assault victim at the same address seven minutes later.
The mother, child and De La Cruz are the only persons listed as having been at the house when police arrived.
De La Cruz's criminal history shows a prior deferred case for assault in 2008, as well as a recent indictment for assault of family or house member impeding breath or circulation in November 2013. A jury trial for that charge has been set for Nov. 17.
De La Cruz has also been jailed on multiple charges of marijuana possession, criminal mischief and evading arrest.
