KHIMKI, RUSSIA – WNBA star Brittany Griner has pleaded guilty to possessing hashish oil in a Russian court on Thursday, June 7, 2022. She also wrote a letter to the President begging him to get her out of prison and home.
On February 17, 2022, Griner was detained at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport for having hashish oil in her luggage. Griner told the judge that she did not intend to break Russian law and packed the vape cartridges accidentally.
"I'd like to plead guilty your honor," Griner said in English that was translated, "But there was no intent. I did not want to break the law."
Griner faces a 10 year prison sentence for large-scale drug transportation of drugs.
Griner also wrote President Joe Biden a letter three days ago. They have released portions of the letter to ESPN. In the letter, she asked Biden to bring her and other detainees home, brings ups her father's military service, and tells Biden she voted for him.
Those portions read:
"I'm terrified I might be here forever. I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don't forget about me and other detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home."
"On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those men who fought for our freedom, including my father who is a Vietnam War Veteran. It hurts thinking about our I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year."
"As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts and without the protection of my wife, family, friends, Olympic jersey, or any accomplishments, I'm terrified I might be here forever."
"I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted for you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore. I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home."
The White House has confirmed receiving Griner's letter.
Griner is due in court next on July 14, 2022.
Brittany Griner played collegiate basketball at Baylor from 2009- 2013 and was the first overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA draft. Griner plays for Russia during the winter months due to better salaries that are offered.

She ( I think ) has no one to blame but herself. Bringing a cannabis product through airport security anywhere, but especially Russia is an astronomically stupid thing to do. Do you hard, hard time and if you survive, get on with the rest of your life.
