SAN ANGELO- The San Angelo City Council approved a conceptual design for renovating the 29th Street Sports Complex during its regular meeting Tuesday.
The 29th Street Sports Complex was the previous home of the San Angelo Girls Fast Pitch Association and Northern Little League since the 1970’s.
Renovation of the main baseball field including brand new bleachers and bathrooms, a practice field along the river, and a new bridge for pedestrians connecting the 29th Street Sports Complex to Kirby Park right across the river.
Right now, the area is dilapidated and overgrown. The road leading to the baseball fields is rough as is the parking lot. The gate to the complex is wide open and the buildings are boarded up.
The city council authorized the hiring of a firm in 2016 for designs and construction drawings and while the concept designs were completed, the project never moved forward. The original designs consisted of renovated all three of the baseball fields and remove the hill in the middle of the complex. The buildings on top of this hill would be demolished. The designs also called for batting cages to be built
Also, a local BMX group has interest in developing a BMX track. This project would give them the space to build a track and extra soil from the demolishing of the hill in the complex would be given to use for this purpose.
The proposed onetime cost includes the new field, practice field, pedestrian bridge, BMX trail, bathrooms, along with equipment and tools, contractor P&E, engineering fees, and a fund for contingency would be just under $1.5 million.
The annual cost of keeping up with the maintenance including salary, fuel, water, ect. Is expected to come in at $93,000.
If everything goes according to plan, the projected could be completed by next year.

Anybody remember why it was shut down ? Could it be the drug dealing, constant vandalism, lack of participation ,people not wanting to be in the neighborhood after dark due to roving gangastas ?
