SAN ANGELO, TX — Congressman August Pfluger said this afternoon that he has learned of a plan in development at the US Department of Homeland Security to drop off illegal migrants into the City of San Angelo.
County Judge Steve Floyd said that Tom Green County and the City of San Angelo are currently working on a joint statement about the dumping of migrants here.
Pfluger said the plan calls for bussing illegal migrants here.
“I have repeatedly told Secretary Mayorkas not to bring illegal migrants into our district, and have received no official response,” Pfluger said in a statement to us.
How the plan will evolve may include the use of the San Angelo Transportation Center at Chadbourne and the Houston Harte Expressway. The building was constructed with the use of federal funds during the Obama Administration with stimulus money from the recovery act following the 2008 financial crisis.
How many illegal migrants may be dropped off in San Angelo is unknown at this time.
Pfluger has previously had harsh words with HHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In April 2022, Pfluger blasted the secretary in a hearing while asking about plans he heard about dropping off 500 illegal migrants here. Watch:

The rule stipulates that cases that are eligible for asylum are expedited in months rather than years, in an effort to alleviate backlog of cases in the courts. Title 42, the Trump era mandate which was set to prevent migrants from entering the US, was to expire on May 23 but was blocked by a lawsuit filed by several states citing that the move to strike down the law "failed to meet standards set by the Administrative Procedure Act" and that there is no permanent solution to handling the inevitable surge in immigration. Opponents to upholding of the law voiced their demands stating that Title 42 is illegal in that it violates immigration laws that prevents immigrants from their right to seek asylum. Since the implementation of Title 42 in March 2020, US Customs and Border Protection has effected "more than 1.8 million expulsions, mostly on the southern border of the US-Mexico Border".
