Possible DWI in High-Speed Rollover Crash at 19th and Main Streets

One vehicle, a four-door sedan, was involved in a rollover crash Monday night at 19th Street and Main Street. The engine of the car was ejected from the chassis and was located sitting approximately 20 feet away from the crashed vehicle.

Over the radio, it was reported that the driver, a 21-year-old male was initially trapped inside the car. He was extracted and reported that he was conscious and breathing. However, another radio call said that the crash victim was having difficulty breathing. A LIVE! reporter is at the scene.

There were at least two occupants of the crashed car. We saw two people leave in an ambulance.

Ladder 1, Fire Rescue and an ambulance, along with the San Angelo police are tending to the scene. The intersection was blocked completely blocked as of 9:45 p.m.

We will update this story as more information is available.

Update 10:15 p.m.

The owner of Bruton Trailers just arrived to assess the damage to his trailer lot. The car heavily damaged the fence that surrounds the business.

Update 11:11 p.m.

San Angelo police traffic investigator Steven Quade briefed San Angelo LIVE! He said that the Grand Prix was traveling northbound on Main Street at a high rate of speed. It departed the roadway, then hit the guardrail on the trailer company’s property. At that point, the Grand Prix rolled over more than once from the impact.

Two occupants of the sedan were transported to Shannon Medical Center. “The front of the car is gone,” Quade said. Debris from the crashed vehicle hit other vehicles ½ block away and the debris field covered almost a block.

“It looks like at least a DWI if not intoxicated assault. But the driver’s in bad shape,” Quade said. SAPD’s CSI is gathering and recording evidence at the scene. The intersection will remain closed for the rest of the evening. Police will release more information tomorrow.

If stiff sentences were handed out for intoxicated drivers we would not be having so many traffic accidents and so many people injured at their hands.
