Off Duty San Angelo Police Officer Airlifted After Crash Near Robert Lee

An off-duty San Angelo police officer was injured in a rollover crash early Saturday morning at approximately 4:45 a.m. near Robert Lee. According to the Texas DPS, Jason Hernandez was driving northbound on TX-208 about one mile south of FM 2662 when a large feral hog obstructed Hernandez’s path of travel.

Hernandez was unable to avoid the hog and struck it almost head-on in his Ford F-250. He traveled off the right hand shoulder, and then corrected back to the left, crossing both lanes of traffic. The F-250 rolled over and came to a rest in the pasture on the west of the road.

Hernandez was airlifted to Shannon Medical Center via Airmed 1 with incapacitating injuries. Later Saturday, volunteers and law enforcement personnel were seen searching the area for Hernandez’s badge and sidearm. Reportedly, both fell out of Hernandez’s vehicle during the rollover.

Hernandez is 30 years old and he was wearing a seatbelt. Trooper Jessica Springer was the investigating officer and no citations were issued.

Hernandez was mentioned on LIVE! in March as the police officer who nabbed a 7-11 burglar on College Hills.

Update August 18, 2014, 9 a.m.

The San Angelo Coalition of Police issued the following update:

Officer Hernandez under went surgery today and has been resting with family and friends near his side. Jason wanted to show everyone that he is in good spirits and that he isn't going to let some Hog keep him down.


Jason has stood up for the first time since the accident and is recovering really well. He has gotten out of the hospital bed and has been relaxing in a reclining chair.


The Hernandez Family wanted to thank everyone for their prayers and concerns for their son. Attached are a few photos Jason has allowed to be posted. As you can see the good Lord was watching over Jason at the time of need.

hope he is okay. He may have been in the right type of truck. Did he actually hit the hog, the grill guard took the impact well?

I was certainly happy and relieved to hear that Officer Hernandez was going to be ok. My husband and I were the ones who spotted first the hog on the highway, then skid marks across the road, and then lights from the truck which was well off the road, down an embankment, barely visible. Although it was dark and we couldn't see to get down to him, my husband and I talked to him several times and he was responsive while we waited for emergency services to get there. We were told we could leave just about the time the Shannon Helicopter arrived so we had no news on Hernandez' condition. My daughter called the hospital later that morning to find out if he was going to be ok. They told her he had been admitted and was going to be ok. What a relief! We were unable to see the pickup in the dark and I am astonished by the picture of the truck in this article! I believe God put us in the right place and at the right time and gave my husband the wisdom to realize what had happened and let him spot the little dome light in the truck. Just seeing the headlights and tail lights, it looked like the truck was some rancher parked at a gate...but there was no road! I thank God that Officer Hernandez survived that horrific crash and is going to be ok.
