SONORA, TX — An early morning chase of a car transporting illegal aliens originating on the quiet streets in the city of Sonora led to one fatality early Thursday morning.
According to the Texas DPS, the Sonora Police Department attempted to stop a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu for a traffic violation. The Malibu driver refused to stop, instead leading the police out of town, reaching Ranch Road 3130 at speeds exceeding 100 mph. In addition, the Malibu driver turned off the headlights while attempting to evade police.
Then, the Malibu while still traveling at a high rate of speed, encountered a curve in the roadway where the driver lost control. The Malibu entered a westbound-side barrow ditch and crashed through a fence, striking multiple trees before rolling over, ejecting two passengers.
Of the two passengers ejected, one died as a result of injuries sustained during the crash.
The driver was a 17-year-old resident of Spring, Texas named Stephen Alexander. DPS reported he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt and sustained non-incapacitating injuries. He was transported to Shannon Medical Center along with undocumented non-citizen Victor Hugo Miranda-Gonzalez, 47. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Also injured and transported to Shannon was Abegable Vargas, 43, also a non-documented non-citizen who was wearing a seatbelt.
Sutton County JP Harris pronounced Noe Rolando Hernandez-Lopez, 32, an undocumented non-citizen, dead at the scene.
The weather was clear but cloudy and the roadways dry. The crash happened about 13 miles east of Sonora on RR 3130 where the speed limit was 55 mph at 2:24 a.m. on March 31, 2022. The crash was investigated by DPS Troopers Daniel Young of the Junction sector and Trooper Jared Poener of the Eden sector. The Sonora Police Department assisted.
