A Peterbilt semi-truck and trailer was parked on the north side of the U.S. 67 facing west when a westbound 1997 Ford pickup plowed into it from behind at 4:45 a.m. Sunday morning. The crash happened four miles east of Barnhart, according to the Irion County Sheriff.
The pickup driver told Texas DPS that he had fallen asleep. All three occupants of the Ford were sent to the hospital. The front seat and back seat passengers had incapacitating injuries, DPS said. The driver had minor injuries.
DPS said that alcohol may have been a contributing factor.
While the occupants of the Ford and the Peterbilt driver were sorting things out, a third vehicle crashed into the back of the Ford. DPS said it was a 2011 Chevrolet pickup. No one was further injured in the second crash. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt, DPS said.
Trooper Jason Lujan-Luna was the investigating officer.
Update 2:20 a.m.
We confirmed with DPS at 10 p.m. Sunday. All three taken to the hospital are alive.
