SAN ANGELO, TX – The City of San Angelo is one step closer to becoming a sanctuary city of the unborn.
According to Pastor Ryan Buck of Immanuel Baptist Church, on Jan. 21, the petition in favor of making San Angelo a sanctuary city for the unborn has been certified.
"It is amazing the support that citizens in San Angelo have given," said Buck.
This is the second attempt at getting the petition certified. The first time the city clerk's office denied the petition because of 800 invalid signatures.
"It was right after Christmas," said Buck. "We got it done. This shows the amount of support from San Angelo citizens."
The group was able to get 1,826 signatures but only needed 1,512. Now the citizens will vote on the ordinance. The earliest election would be in May but Buck expects the city to hold the election in Nov.
The City Council is expected to take action on the matter at their next meeting Feb. 1, 2022.
