WATCH: M&M Candy Goes Woke

MCLEAN, VA – M&M announced earlier this week that their famous M&M candy characters will be going through a sort of redesign.

The famous M&M characters will be getting kind of redesign, a makeover to include more modern personalities. This is part of a global effort on Mars’ part to create a world where everyone belongs.

The colors: red, green, blue, brown, yellow, and orange will not change but the personas of the candies will.

The green M&M, which currently poses as seductive in white boots will be wearing a pair of sneakers instead.  Green is noted on the M&M’s website as enjoying being the “hype woman” for her M&M comrades. Mars wants Green to better represent confidence and empowerment as a strong female character.

The two female characters, the green and brown M&M’s, will see a change to show a more supportive relationship as they’ve often been at odds in the past.

Also going to progressive change is the orange M&M. Mars believes that the orange M&M is the most relatable to the younger generation, or Gen-Z, as they are considered the most anxious generation.

Perhaps the most famous duo of M&M’s, Red and Yellow, will also see change.

The red M&M, which has been portrayed as the leader, but has also been labeled a “bully”, will take on a more friendly approach to the other colors. Yellow, which is portrayed as dim-witted, will stay the same.

Cathryn Sleight, the Chief Growth Officer at Mars Wrigley said, “M&M’s has long been committed to creating colorful fun for all, and this purpose serves as a more concrete commitment to what we’ve always believed as a brand: that everyone has the right to enjoy moments of happiness, and fun is the most powerful way to help people feel that they belong.”
