MIDLAND, TX – A Midland teen was awarded a $10,000 prize after winning the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Junior Shootout, one of Texas' biggest shooting tournaments.
Justin Chavez beat out over 900 competitors vying for the coveted first-place prize at the tournament.
“Finally winning this rodeo shoot, I really did feel accomplished,” said Justin. “I felt proud of myself that my hard work paid off.”
According to Justin, he began shooting at the age of eight after his dad missed little league signups.
After being told he would not be part of a baseball team, Chavez and his father, Jesus, began the drive home.
On the way home, Mr. Chavez saw a sign on the road announcing 4-H shotgun tryouts. Thus instead of coming home with a baseball bat, Justin came home with a shotgun.
"When I got back home, my wife thought I was nuts,” said Mr.Chavez.
Years of practice and competition have paid off for Justin who will sign with Angelo State for clay shooting.
Justin's goal is to eventually shoot professionally.
“The ammo I shoot, B&P, I would love to work for them, get sponsored by them,” said Justin. “I’d love to be sponsored by them."
