SAN ANGELO, TX – Shannon Medical Center's newest mega-building is complete and will start taking patients in as soon as Monday.
In March 2020 the City of San Angelo's Building and Inspections Department received a permit request from Shannon Medical Center to build a new rehabilitation center in west San Angelo. A month later a permit was approved for a $16,610,806 building to be built at 6046 Appaloosa Tr.
Less than a year later the building was completed. A spokesperson for Shannon clarified that the building ended up actually costing around $19 million.
The strictly in-patient facility has 40 beds. It has a number of amenities including a dialysis center, a family room, and an isolation room.
Shannon's partner in the rehab center is Encompass Health. Tracie Watkins, CEO of Shannon Rehabilitation Hospital, says that the two entities partnered up after seeing a market for the rehab center in San Angelo.
"We are just really proud and excited to bring world class rehabilitative care to the Concho Valley," said Watkins."I think it's a much needed service and we are very excited to partner with Shannon to provide this for everyone."
Watkins confirmed that the hospital is set to accept at the most 20 patients in on March 29. They expect to be running at full capacity by May 1.
Shannon has built and acquired a number of new assets including the former Community Medical Center, the new Shannon Pharmacy, and the COVID-19 vaccination site inside the Sunset Mall. Unlike other Shannon properties that are tax-exempt from property taxes because of Shannon Health's non-profit status, the new rehab facility will be on the property tax rolls.
Shannon announced earlier this month that they will be building another mega-building downtown for its cancer treatment practice. See: Shannon Announces New $36 Million Cancer Center Downtown.
