AUSTIN, TX – The Austin City Council yesterday decided to cut the Austin Police Department's by 1/3. After hearing of this Governor Greg Abbott gave a statement on his feelings towards the decision.
According to the Governor's Office, on August 13, Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement following Austin City Council's decision to cut $150 million from the Austin Police Department's budget:
"Some cities are more focused on political agendas than public safety," said Governor Abbott. "Austin’s decision puts the brave men and women of the Austin Police Department and their families at greater risk, and paves the way for lawlessness. Public safety is job one, and Austin has abandoned that duty. The legislature will take this issue up next session, but in the meantime, the Texas Department of Public Safety will stand in the gap to protect our capital city."
Austin now joins other US cities such as Baltimore and Seattle to defund the Police.

Abbott can go virtue signal somewhere else. Many of those in political power today accuse others of the very thing which they themselves are guilty - “... more focused on political agendas than public safety.” Abbott resembles his remark. I might see him in a different light if he would stop hiding behind executive fiat regarding his COVID-19 emergency declarations, stop picking winners and losers, start talking to his legislature and call a special session (like they have requested) to address the changes to and infringements on our daily lives. He does not need to wait until the next session. He is not interested in letting the people of Texas have their input and letting our direct representatives speak on our behalf. He is beholden to his handlers, he’s bought and paid for. We need true constitutionalists, statesman, in office. I suspect Abbott is neither.
