License Plate Identifies Dead Subject at Dog Park

SAN ANGELO, TX — The man who law enforcement said killed himself with a self-inflicted gunshot before being apprehended was likely a Dennis McGorty of San Angelo. He was wanted by federal prosecutors for possessing and distributing child pornography.

According to his indictment, federal prosecutors presented 12 specific computerized video files for the grand jury to consider. All of them contained underaged children conducting lewd acts. The grand jury handed down the indictment yesterday, Aug. 12.

Almost as soon as McGorty was reported dead by suicide during the attempt to arrest him this morning, federal prosecutors in Lubbock posted a motion to dismiss the case.

The SUV the suspect was purportedly driving was seen at the crime scene. By tracing the license plate, we were able to place McGorty's vehicle at the scene of the incident that was in front of the San Angelo dog park this morning near the intersection of Millbrook and College Hills in southwest San Angelo.

According to DPS spokesman Justin Baker, upon being pulled over, the suspect exited the SUV and walked to the front of the SUV where he fatally shot himself. Authorities have not officially identified the dead man.

San Angelo LIVE! is hesitant to report suicides unless the subject is a well-known or famous person, or if the suicide occurs in a public place. This incident satisfies the latter requirement.

The best evidence that it is McGorty is the request to dismiss. The license plate means absolutely nothing other than it was McGorty’s vehicle.

Why did the federal prosecutors issue the arrest warrant in the first place if they were going to change their minds and dismiss the case? New evidence? The prosecutors had to have evidence before going to the grand jury for the warrant in the first place. The guy must have known he was guilty to commit suicide in the first place.

The charges on the federal indictment match the description given by LE at the scene. He was indicted yesterday and today there's a motion to dismiss filed by the US Attorney. Hardly a leap. Then the license plate matches. Maybe a small step.
