SAN ANGELO, TX — The County-City Health Department in San Angelo announced the COVID-19 case count increased to 861, up a whopping 91 from Thursday. But the reason for the increase has to do with delayed reporting caused by an additional and new way health care providers are testing patients here, not an indication of a worsening COVID-19 situation in Tom Green County.
There were an additional 54 COVID-19 tests that were conducted on patients between June 30 and July 9. Those 54 test results were added to today's 37 new cases. Of the 861 total positive cases reported since the pandemic reporting began March 18, 807 are Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests and 54 are positive cases discovered with the newer Antigen tests over the past two weeks, for which reporting has been delayed since June 30.
In summary, there were 37 new cases reported today. And, an additional 54 cases backdated to June 30 were reported today also.
The City began breaking out the positive test results by what type of tests were administered Friday. Here are the differences:
PCR tests
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests are a molecular diagnostic testing technique that detects the genetic material from the virus and can help diagnose an active COVID-19 infection. Testing samples are collected from the nasal cavity using swabs.
Antigen tests
These diagnostic tests quickly detect fragments of proteins found on or within the virus by testing samples collected from the nasal cavity using swabs. Antigen tests are very specific for the virus but are not as sensitive as molecular PCR tests. This means that positive results from antigen tests are highly accurate, but there is a higher chance of false negatives, so negative results do not rule out infection. With this in mind, negative results from an antigen test may need to be confirmed with a PCR test prior to making treatment decisions or to prevent the possible spread of the virus due to a false negative.

The Good News
This week, 177 people and contacts with known positive cases were released from quarantine/isolation. What remains are 353 active COVID-19 patients awaiting recovery. Of those 353, 42 are hospitalized as of Friday afternoon. Hospitalizations are down from yesterday from 48, as reported by the City.
The City of San Angelo Public Affairs is reporting COVID-19 data on behalf of multiple agencies and hospitals throughout Tom Green County. Some positive test results are listed from outside Tom Green County. The county-city health department in San Angelo reports all test results regardless of the home county or state of the patient if that test was conducted inside the boundaries of the county.

Permalink... that these women are total idiots and they do not understand that when a person is in a place of business that it is considered private property of the Casino owners and they by law have the right to refuse service to anyone that does not follow the rules set by the management and owners. PermalinkI'm not a medical expert, but this is my view. You know good news goes unreported, so bear with me. The good news is that Covid is far less lethal than we are led to believe. San Angelo's current (7/11) Infection Fatality Rate (IFR) is only .46%. IFR is obtained by dividing total confirmed Covid deaths (4) by total confirmed Covid cases (861). And it's still not clear if those 4 fatalities were caused by Covid or by some other comorbidity. So the real number of deaths caused by Covid could be lower. ( I found one chart that said the number of San Angelo Covid deaths was actually *1*. I've yet to verify that.) The Crude Mortality Rate (CMR) is obtained by using the total number of Covid deaths as the denominator and the population as the numerator: 4/100,015. That gives San Angelo a current mortality rate of .00399%. That's assuming 4 deaths. Of course, CMR will increase if there are additional Covid deaths. These numbers indicate that the Corona virus does not present a significant threat of death in San Angelo, or anywhere for that matter. Most people who get this virus recover and are fine. So focus on the current .46% IFR and the extremely low CMR of .00399% and be encouraged!

PermalinkThe IFR number I gave in my previous post assumes that the current active 393 cases will not result in additional deaths. We don't know that, so I'll use the 450 number of released cases. That would be 4/450=.89%. So at this present time we can say for certain that the Infection Fatality Rate is .89%, but will likely be lower as recoveries continue to outnumber deaths.
