ABILENE, TX – An Abilene dog will need to have her paw amputated after an Abilene Police Officer shot her as he responded to a domestic disturbance call on Tuesday morning in South Abilene.
According to KTXS, an email from APD stated that the officer fired a round and struck the six-year-old pit bull, Roxie, after she moved aggressively towards them.
Roxie’s owner, Shauna Duarte, claims the officer shot Roxie in the front yard of her home without a warning. Duarte stated that when she opened the front her three dogs came out; a chihuahua, a husky, and a pit bull.
"There was about 15 officers and only one felt like he was in fear for his life because she’s a pit bull," Duarte said. "And decided to immediately pull out a gun and shoot."
Duarte stated Roxie is the “sweetest dog you’ll ever meet in your life” and was just trying to protect her. The veterinary bill to treat Roxie’s injury is over $600 and has put a financial strain on Duarte and her family.
The paw will need to be amputated according to the vet that treated Roxie and that procedure will cost over $2,000.
Duarte claims that because of the injury that Roxie suffered she will not be able to hold her daughter’s birthday over the weekend.
"Now, I’m not going to be able to do that," Duarte said. "Because I’m having to pay for a cop that shot my dog."
Duarte was advised to file a claim with the City of Abilene to be compensated for the vet bills, but it could take months for the request to be approved and paid out.

The moron cop should pay for all the medical bills they got pepper spray and a taser also if they were in the yard of cop won’t pay then sue the hell out of him and let him be retrained Rookie I bet

PermalinkThey can very well be the “sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet in your life”, in fact, every case involving a pitbull mauling immediately follows someone asserting such, and it probably has some truth behind it. They CAN be the sweetest dogs -- around their owners and their owner's immediate family members, but once a group of cops, an unfamiliar child or someone's cat walks by it's more often than not, a dangerous situation.
In this particular incident, the police were on the scene responding to a domestic disturbance in which the dog owner's asshole husband had moments before, broke some window's at the residence. The officers responding had no idea what or who they were going to encounter upon arriving, or if the suspect was still on the scene.
The officers were there to first of all protect anyone who was in danger, in particular the wife. Upon arriving at the property, an angry pitbull comes running out towards them. In instances like these, whether the immediate threat is on two legs or four, an officer has a split second to react, and in this instance the shooting seems to be justified.
Had the officer made the mistake of assuming a pissed off pitbull may have a sudden change of heart, once she saw his badge, he may have ended up being the one missing a limb, with the owners still standing firm on the supposition that their dear pitbull was indeed the sweetest dog on Earth who'd never hurt a fly.
