SAN ANGELO, TX — A DPS Trooper caused a crash on East Loop 306 while on routine patrol Friday morning.
The trooper, in a Ford Interceptor, a variant of the civilian Ford Explorer, was traveling northbound on the loop when he observed a traffic violation from a vehicle heading south. The trooper, who was in an outside lane, tried to make a u-turn through the median to pursue the errant driver, but failed to see a white GMC pickup that was behind it in the inside lane.
The pickup struck the trooper as he was making the left turn and sent it into the guard rail.
Both drivers and a passenger in the pickup are alright, according to Sgt. Baker of Texas DPS. Baker did say that the trooper would probably go to the hospital to be checked out as a precautionary measure, but he was seen walking and talking at the crash scene.
Baker said that the accident is under investigation at two levels. There is the standard crash investigation and there will also be an internal review and investigation since a DPS trooper was involved.
The driver who the DPS trooper was turning around to catch probably never knew what happened behind him or her.

What a lucky guy in the white GMC pickup..... Not only does he now get a brand spanking new pickup truck, compliments of the State of Texas, but he just has to say his neck and finger hurts really bad and that personal injury check they write him that has about 7 zero's on the end of the check will sure make them feel much better............

PermalinkYou set a great example, Mr. Trooper. First, you try to cross the median, which is not something that's really smart, then you don't look for oncoming traffic. Seems like something others might get citations for.
