SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University issued a warning to all students this morning concerning a report of gunfire in the wee early hours Sunday morning at a dive bar next to the campus.
According to the alert, ASU and San Angelo police responded to a “shots fired” call at about 2:30 a.m. this morning. When police arrived partiers were dispersing, ASU stated. Officers were told about the gunfire that happened during a disturbance there. Police searched for evidence.
The bar, now named “Club Masquerade” is in a dilapidated strip center at the corner of S. Johnson and Vanderventer St. The exact address is 2408 Vanderventer. The location of the disturbance last night has been a bar for at least a decade with various names throughout the years. Currently, the sign is a plywood board with black spray paint masking the previous name of the bar.
Eventually, police found a handgun underneath a vehicle in the parking lot early this morning. There were no arrests for the gunfire, but ASU police did arrest one suspect for public intoxication.
Angelo State University issued the alert this morning to warn students about the area. “Please report and suspicious or criminal activity to police,” ASU stated.

I've been away for a long time but, sometime during the last 3rd of the last century wasn't that bar called (The Place)? If so, there was another shooting back then except someone died. Do any of you old timers remember?

PermalinkYes, a young man named Joe Ellett (sp?) was murdered in the parking lot back in the 80's. He was the drummer in a local band and was leaving the club after it closed. A member of a family of notorious thugs had been thrown out earlier in the evening and came back to shoot the place up. Poor Joe was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

PermalinkAlthough this joint is probably a dive bar in actuality, it's kind of hard to respect any news source that would use the term. This place is like one of the dive bars of journalism sometimes.
