UPDATE: Fire Reignites After Two San Angelo Firefighters Injured in Pawn Shop Fire

SAN ANGELO, TX -- San Angelo Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Todd Sanford says two firefighters were transported to the hospital with minor injuries from the major structure fire at the EZ Pawn Shop at 2018 S. Bryant Blvd. Tuesday evening.

About three quarters of the SAFD firefighters on duty were dispatched to the fire which was called in about 6 p.m.

Sanford says when they arrived they made a fast attack on the fire because thick, heavy black smoke and flames were visible from the front of the building.  Police quickly blocked off the northbound lanes of S. Bryant for firefighters and emergency responders. Thick black smoke could be seen across the city.

Sanford says "being a pawn shop it is very secure.  There is one door in the front and one door in the back.  It's a cinder block building that holds in a lot of heat.  It was a very, very dangerous fire right here."

The first firefighters on the scene made a fast attack.  There were four trucks on the scene at first.  Sanford says when he arrived they called three more trucks and four ambulances to the scene.

"Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion but they're doing real good."

The fire started at about 6 p.m.  "It's still 98 degrees out here and they have been here for two hours.  We got solid concrete, we got a cinder block building. It's just so hot in there."  Chief Sanford said they cut a hole in the roof to let the heat escape.

AEP crews cut electricity to the building and city crews cut off water to the pawn shop.

Sanford says the cause of the fire is still under investigation and there is no way to know at this time the extent of the damage to the building.

Firefighters kept the inferno from spreading to adjacent buildings.

This is a developing story.
