Sherwood Way Claims Two More Vehicles in Rush Hour Crash

In my opinion, its the citizens of this town. No one here drives defensively. Everyone and I mean everyone is so addicted to there phones (basically slaves) that no one pays attention to the roads. I would bet every reason for an accident, cell phones were a factor. The people of this town cannot chew bubble gum and walk at the same time. What makes you think they can drive and text at the same time. Just my observation.

Yeah, cell phones may play a small factor and just to be fair, young drivers may contribute another very small percentage, but the number 1 factor of the majority of the accidents in this town is the old aged drivers. If they would just try my theory for 6 months and revoke the drivers license of anyone over the age of 70, you'd see the accident rates and percentages in this article plummet to one half or more......

Please don't take this literally but texting on a cell phone while driving will add 100 years to your life.

Cell phones, age, bubble gum...all are likely causes for accidents around here, but I personally think it is lack of understanding how to drive (e.g. laws, customs, courtesies, etc.). I can't tell you how many times I see illegal driving habits occurring - on top of the cell phone, age, bubble gum issues. People are just more stupid then they used to be... Welcome to full fledged Idiocracy!

We can argue all day long about what makes a bad driver, unfortunately it's all the above and a general me, me, me first attitude. People tailing too close to the car in front of them, always squeezing in where there is not enough room & just generally not paying attention. aww, I just realized our old sign is still up. :)

I agree with Jo Moore's comment about the "me me me" attitude. There's a LOT of self-entitlement on our roads. So glad I don't live out at the lake anymore. Can't tell you how many high-dollar cars would zoom past me only to turn left into Bentwood. (yes, I'm profiling!) The rich people feel entitled to drive however they want because they're rich. The young people drive fast because they're invincible. They're young, and all the old drivers drive too slow and they have somewhere IMPORTANT to be, and five minutes ago at that! The working class people are in a hurry, too. I can't tell you how many people passed me on Southwest this morning as I was taking my daughter to school. School limit is 20, but they'll try to squeeze past going 27 - (funny thing is, I stay my 20 and I'm still right behind them in the dropoff line!) There was no need for them to speed after all! People who are late dropping kids off... people who are rushing to get to work. People who cut across three lanes of traffic, only to slam on their brakes in front of someone in the far right or left lane because they had to make that turn first. My biggest frustration aside from all this - is there NEVER seems to be a cop in sight. NOT ONE! Why are they not monitoring our roads during the rush hour traffic? Why are they not catching the @$$wipes who run the red lights (not yellow, RED!) Why are they not enforcing school zones??

Yes cell phones are a factor on these accidents. I believe the other reason is that the increase of traffic recently because of the oil industry, the ' speed ' on these roads like Sherwood way, Knickerbocker, Bryant, and Beauregard i.e. are too fast. The Police Department and the City Council should take a look at this to decrease the legal speed on these streets. Reaction time will increase to avoid an accident. It just makes sense. I have noticed at other cities the speed is normally at 30 miles an hour on even on 3 lanes of traffic in one direction. You want San Angelo drivers to slow down change the speed limits and the police to enforce it. The drivers will eventually will comply and pass a law against cell phone usage.

What is funny (not funny ha ha) is I just spent a whole weekend in the DFW Metroplex driving around on I-35 and I-820 and had less almost crash scares there than I do here just driving in the Walmart parking lot on a Tuesday!

So how many accidents, damage, medical cost, and lives does it take to make a change in the traffic where it occurs most often. Is it really worth waiting too long for something that can not be replaced LIFE itself. I think the city, count, or even the state should act now to make changes. Lower the speed limit. Adjust driver attitude by enforcing the speed limit, driving thru red lights, improper turns, illegal lane changes, tailgating, road rage, and as minor as using turn signals (they are not a option on vehicles). So easy to change before more human life is hurt.

I agree with all of the comments as to the traffic accidents in our City. There seems to be a need for speed and not a bit of fear in getting a ticket let alone pay a fine. Us "old people" can well remember the high price of a speeding ticket not to mention the hike in our insurance rate and fear of losing our license. Take a look at how many tickets are issued for speed without being involved in an accident to five years ago. Look at the lost revenues from speeding tickets. Yes we need to lower the speed limits however if there is no fear in getting a ticket do you think folks will comply. Yes we need to NOT use our cell phones and drive, yes we need to leave for work or school in plenty of time and yes we need to be better drivers and a more friendly driver. Is it all because we have forgotten, have not been taught or just really don't care? I care and pledge to do my part, how about the rest of our City?

The average speed on San Angelo streets is 35 MPH. How much lower would you propose we go? 25..? Maybe 15? We'd never get to our Bluegrass shows or junk stores in good time at that rate. How about just sticking it to the dregs who can't manage a simple commute without flipping their vehicles over as if they were B-movie action stuntmen rather than menial laborers who hit the snooze button a few too many times? Whether you've brought traffic to a crawl due to your text-inspired fender bender or the subconscious need to turn yourself into ground beef, you're making things rough on the motorists who still remember how to coexist in an otherwise safe and peaceful manner. Punishing ALL for the transgressions of a FEW is never the answer, however indefinitely revoking the licenses of select reckless imbeciles and slapping them with exorbitant fines may be a step in the right direction.
