Washington, D.C. — Congressman Mike Conaway (TX-11) released the following statement after voting against H.R. 2500, the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):
“The Democrats have broken from a decades long tradition of producing a strong bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act that puts the national security and safety of our country before politics. Since the beginning of my time serving on the House Armed Services Committee, even under previous Democrat leadership, we have always found common ground to create an overwhelming bipartisan, and often unanimous, consensus on this piece of legislation. Unfortunately, this year’s NDAA stands in stark contrast from previous years and I could not support a bill that leaves Americans less safe.
“In its current form, the FY20 NDAA is chock full of dangerous, partisan provisions that ignore the dire needs of our service members and the reality of the threats we face across the globe. Our military leaders have told us explicitly what they need in order to successfully execute their missions around the world and maintain our competitive edge against Russia and China, but the FY20 NDAA fails to provide the appropriate tools and resources to achieve these objectives. I hope Chairman Smith and Speaker Pelosi will work with Republicans as this legislation advances to ensure that the President’s topline request is met and our men and women in uniform have the support they so desperately need.”

Yet yesterday, Mitch McConnell and the fear mongering GOP shot down the Secure Elections Act that gives the DHS oversight of the cyber security of all voting machines and even allowing precincts to use paper ballots if requested. This would ensure that no outside countries could tamper with any and all elections. So which is it Mr. Conaway? Would you like to maintain that "competitive edge" over Russia and China? Or are you scared that you'll lose it all in 2020 without a little outside help?

PermalinkCONway just likes to stoke the fire. He said nothing when trump raided defense money for 3000 year old technology. Not a word from him when trump asked foreign spy agencies to help him AGAIN. When will the Banana Republicans put country first and trump last?
