In San Angelo, Republic Services Donates Storm Clean-Up Manpower, Equipment

SAN ANGELO, TX — Republic Services, the city’s incumbent trash hauler, is assisting in the cleanup and removal of storm debris, donating all storm-related services.

The City's trash contractor is dispatching trucks and employees from other divisions to assist in the effort. Republic has also staged large roll-off containers at the debris drop-off points at Foster Communications Coliseum and the Lake Operations facility to separate construction debris from vegetative waste, according to City of San Angelo spokesman Anthony Wilson.

Republic provides free and extra trash carts in the Bradford area for use in the cleanup. Republic has also dispatched rear-load trucks and helpers to the neighborhood to pick up debris left on curbs.

“The City appreciates Republic's partnership in this effort,” Wilson said.

The trash contract of 2014 does not specify that Republic has to offer storm cleanup for no charge. The contract states, “In the event provider “RS” is required to perform additional services as a result of natural events, Provider shall be compensated for costs of materials, labor, equipment, and disposal fees.”

Republic’s Municipal Services Manager Joe Spano said the trash hauler has brought in extra manpower and additional trucks from other divisions to make sure storm-struck areas have a constant outlet for debris and household trash disposal. There will be no extra charge for this, Spano said.

Tuesday, Republic worked with the City of San Angelo Operations in the Bradford area, ground zero for the tornado strike Saturday, to police the roadways of trash, empty trash carts, and accept bulk trash items from affected homes. He said the urgency then was to keep the area clear for AEP line technicians to restore power.

For all San Angelo residents, Republic is manning two debris drop-off locations. They are hauling multiple roll-off containers from the coliseum drop-off location and from the Lake Nasworthy location located across from Mathis Field off Knickerbocker Road. Separating tree limbs from trash is the primary concern there. The City of San Angelo contracted with a tree-shredding chipper company to turn tree limbs into mulch at the two locations.

A line of thunderstorms, high-speed wind, and a tornado measured by the San Angelo National Weather Service as an EF2 hit the city early Saturday morning. The hardest hit area of town is the area around Bradford Elementary School north of 21st Street in the northern part of the city. Cleanup efforts have continued since.
