SAN ANGELO, TX -- The city of San Angelo is under a flash flood warning this morning as heavy thunderstorms have dumped five inches of rain in Mertzon and two inches at Mathis Field with additional heavy rain on the way.
According to the National Weather Service, at 6:51 a.m. doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain from Barnhart to Mertzon to San Angelo.
Over 5.6 inches has fallen in Mertzon and 2 inches at the airport in San Angelo. An additional 1 to 2 inches is likely. Numerous low water crossings are flooded and barricaded in Mertzon. Flooding has already begun. Some locations that will experience flooding include... San Angelo, Mertzon, Twin Buttes Reservoir, Lake Nasworthy, Tankersley, Sherwood and Us-67 Near The Irion-Tom Green County Line.
At 6:56 a.m. radar were tracking strong thunderstorms across Tom Green, Concho, McCulloch, Schleicher and Menard counties. The storms were moving at 30 mph.
Wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph will be possible with this storm.
Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
