SAN ANGELO, TX -- It's not every day that A-list celebrities stop in San Angelo, so you could imagine the surprise for Whataburger employees when Texas native Matthew McConaughey drove through for a bite to eat on Monday.
The star stopped at the Whataburger on 19th St. and seemed to be really inconspicuous. Nobody recognized him until an employee brought up the last name on the card used for the purchase.
"His credit card said a different [first] name, but it said his last name," Whataburger employee Elizabeth Hernandez said.
After looking at the card, Hernandez looked out the window and knew it was Matthew McConaughey and the employees began asking questions to which McConaughey played along.
"One of my other friends opened the window and asked, 'Are you related to him?'" Hernandez recalled. "He joked and said 'I'm his twin brother.' I was like, 'He doesn't have a twin.' He was like 'you really think I'm his twin brother?' I said, you're actually him."
McConaughey confirmed Hernandez's suspicions and offered to take pictures with the employees and say his patented catchphrase from Dazed and Confused, so long as he got his food first.
After that, everything was "Alright, alright, alright."
"We were all excited because nobody famous really comes to San Angelo like that," Hernandez said. "We were just in shock. We kept talking about it when we left work."

I get the excitement of a celebrity, but c'mon, leave the poor dude alone. He's just a person like the rest of us. I'm sure he gets enough of this crap in LA. Texas can be better than that.

PermalinkI grew up in So Cal. My city was peppered with celeb's. I can tell you from experience, if you approach them like a friend you happened to see at a grocery store, with a calm, casual "Hi ____, how are you?", most react in kind.
No one likes being swarmed by mobs of people, paparazzi, or otherwise. We'd probably see a different Matt McConaughey, had that been his San Angelo WB experience.
On a side note, we need an IN-N-OUT BURGER.

PermalinkNever had In-N-Out, but I'd love to try it, from what others have said.

PermalinkHe’s just checking on his place around mertzon he goes to a certain wal mart late when a lot of people aren’t there I’ve bumped into him before. It’s funny him hiding behind an old silver belly cowboy hat with holes in it I knew it was him I just said HELLO MR MCmonaughey he just gave that goofy smiles I didn’t ask for picture or autograph I did want to shake his hand. But I didn’t want to bother him sad that you can’t just hangout with a cool guy he has to be on guard I’m sure he will be around more since there’s a lot of water around this year. Aka fishing and good pasture for animals unless he’s movie busy

PermalinkMatthew McConaughey has a daughter who takes dance at a studio near where he lives here in Austin. He comes in just like a regular dad, watches his daughter dance (typically wearing jeans, a ball cap, and a four-day growth of beard) and the other folks in the studio leave him alone.
He does grocery shopping at a local HEB. Folks leave him alone.
He goes into a local convenience store to do the things normal folks do in a convenience store. Folks leave him alone.
We who live in areas where celebrities live, and I have lived in Dallas, see them often and leave them alone.
I have said many times I would much prefer being rich to being famous. As luck would have it I am neither.
