Will the New Heff's Burgers on Sherwood Way Ever Open?

SAN ANGELO, TX — Will the San Angelo Heff’s Burgers location on Sherwood Way ever open? That’s the question many are asking since the disappearance of all construction activity at the proposed new location months ago.

Ground was broken on building the new Heff’s location in the 2900 block of Sherwood Way across the street from the Bank of America building in July 2018. But construction soon after the structure was finished stopped.

Heff’s president Brenda Heffernan said this morning that the San Angelo location will be open in June.

“We’re looking forward to having a brand new Heff’s there,” she said.

The grand opening date was delayed and construction was halted temporarily because Heff’s is busy opening other locations in the region, Heffernan said. Currently, Heff’s has nine locations open: three in Abilene, two in Lubbock, and one each in Early, Eastland, Sweetwater, and Wichita Falls. Heff’s is also franchising its concept. She has expansion plans to open a hamburger restaurant in Breckenridge and Stephenville.

Heff’s in San Angelo was formerly located on N. Bryant in the restaurant building on the Inn of the Conchos motel. It ran into trouble when Heff’s former landlord, The Inn of the Conchos, sued in district court here claiming $48,000 in unpaid rent.

That story has two sides, Heffernan said. She said the former location was in disrepair and the landlord was unresponsive to fixing problems, such as a leaking roof.

Regardless, Heff’s agreed in court to pay the rent owed in a March 2018 judgement. Scott Zaruba, the general manager at the Inn of the Conchos, said Heff’s has fulfilled all obligations since.

“I’d like to just move on,” Heffernan said. She said she is relieved the episode is over and has hired new staff that will prevent something like the Inn of the Conchos saga from happening again. “I want to do what is right!” she said.

“We love San Angelo,” she said. “We’re fixing to start back on it (the construction).” The City of San Angelo permits department said the construction permit will soon expire for inactivity. Heff's may need to renew it before continuing work there.
