SAN ANGELO, TX — Court documents and interviews with friends reveal a sordid tale about the two murder victims, Jared Lohse and a man Jared called his “dad,” Jack “Chubby” Harris, before the two were shot in their faces and their bodies burned in a fully-engulfed house fire in the wee early morning hours of March 20, 2019. The only way police could identify the two was with what remained of each victim’s driver’s licenses in their wallets.
Lohse, 27, had a violent past. He was sentenced to 10 years deferred adjudication in September 2009, accused of stabbing a man during a fistfight in December 2008. He accepted deferred adjudication for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon back then. Three months later, Lohse violated the terms of his probation when he assaulted his mother and pushed his 10-year-old brother down, where his brother’s head was injured when it struck a hard tile floor, according to the police report from December 29, 2009. Lohse was also charged with ripping the cell phone out of his mother’s hand that night and damaging the phone while his mother attempted to call 9-1-1. In a plea deal, Lohse was sentenced to three years in the State Penitentiary.
Lohse’s time in the state prison system was not far removed from his mind when, in October 2016, Lohse was a participant in what became known as a front yard brawl. During a night of drinking at the former Fast Eddie’s pool hall on Sherwood Way, Lohse’s wife at the time, Amber Robertson, attracted the eye of a rival suitor other than Lohse. As multiple angry messages were exchanged via Facebook messenger, Lohse drove his party of four, including Amber to a house on Sage Rd. near Grape Creek to confront the group.
The two men Lohse said were harassing his wife pulled 410 shotguns out of the bushes and shot Lohse’s girl in the gut. As she was being treated in ICU at a local hospital, Lohse called San Angelo LIVE! and demanded we tell his side of the story. The cops had it all wrong, he said. And that was especially troubling because Lohse didn’t want to go back to jail. Read the interview with Lohse and Amber Robertson after the Brawl here.
At that time, he was sitting on drug charges for possessing less than one gram of heroin during a traffic stop in late 2015. Charges from the front yard brawl never made it to district court and he was, at the time of his murder, on probation after a deferred adjudication plea deal was made for his heroin possession. See "Front Yard Brawl" from 2016.
Jack “Chubby” Harris was described to us as being the father of Jared Lohse’s brother, but not biologically Jared’s father. On the morning of his murder, Chubby had been out of the penitentiary for only about four weeks where he served 28 years for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. Friends recount how Chubby and Jared had sort of bonded as father and son, but at 27 years old, Jared had never known Chubby, who was incarcerated all of Jared’s life until just four weeks ago.
On the night of March 19 and early morning of March 20, friends at the Whiskey River bar on E. Concho Ave last saw Jared and Chubby.
“Sure, Jared was intoxicated, but he was the most well-behaved drunk Jared I have ever seen,” said one friend who asked not to be identified. She said she had known Jared for 12 years.
“He said he had to get up at 6 a.m. and go to work,” she said.
Chubby was a good guy who always had your back, is how friends described him. He had found work at a local tire shop and was piecing his life back together. Jared and Chubby left the bar at around 12:30 a.m. the morning of his murder. Friends said of Chubby he’d always tell them, “If you ever need anything, call me and I’ll be there.”
“We had no inclination anything could be wrong,” the friend said.
From the time the duo left the Whiskey River bar, the saga of Jared and Chubby turns dark.
Police were hampered by the fact that the scene of the crime was burned. Easy evidence like fingerprints, a murder weapon, and bullets were difficult to use from the scene of the fire. The arrest affidavit of Dwayne Chance Chadwick, 36, is 3.5 pages long and describes police detectives’ interviews with multiple witnesses, as police seem to have built a circumstantial case. No murder weapon is listed. Fingerprints aren’t mentioned.
Early Tuesday morning, just before 3 a.m. a San Angelo police patrol officer was dispatched to a structure fire at 4859 N. Chadbourne St. Upon arrival, the officer was informed by the fire department there were two bodies inside the burning building.
The affidavit explained where Jared and Chubby were after leaving the bar and before being found murdered inside the charred remains of that house that burned.
Earlier that morning, right after Chubby and Jared left the bar, they stopped by the Stripes Convenience Store in the 3900 block of N. Chadbourne St. to talk to Angelicca Gaede, a store clerk there who was renting the house 10 blocks north of there that eventually became an inferno grave for Chubby and Jared a couple hours later. The affidavit states that Jared and Chubby announced to her that the two were headed to her house where they intended to start living permanently.
There was a problem with that, however. Angelicca explained to police detectives that Chadwick and his girlfriend Ashley Harris were living there already. The house was rented and the tenants had trouble paying the rent for March. Someone eventually paid the rent and police have a photo of the rent receipt from the landlord.
Scrawled in black ink on the receipt, the words read, “I paid the Rent but they don’t want her here and apparently they already made a deal with Jared Lohse and his old lady.” Angelicca told police that the landlord wanted everyone out except her by Friday, March 22.
Who Angelicca was to live with didn’t seem to involve her decision. On about the same day the receipt was dated, Jared, Chubby and Jared’s current girlfriend Sylvia Hammond visited with Angelicca at her rent house and, “while there, Jared Lohse told her what the new rules for the house were going to be,” the affidavit states.
Apparently, according to the affidavit, Chadwick’s girl Ashley had failed to pay the rent and the March 11 payment by Angelicca was to keep all who were bunking there from getting evicted.
Police do not detail exactly what happened when Jared and Chubby arrived at the house that morning, and from reading between the lines of the affidavit, Chadwick and his girlfriend Ashley were there, and Jared and Chubby were going to evict them.
Police said the autopsy revealed that Jared was shot twice in the face and Chubby once. The medical examiner said the gunshot wounds to both were fatal.
According to the affidavit, Chadwick later that morning visited a residence on Guadalupe and talked to a man there named Shannon McGhee. According to multiple witnesses police interviewed, Chadwick told McGhee he shot and killed Jared and Chubby and needed McGhee to go to the house and burn it down.
The affidavit states that McGhee left the home on Guadalupe with Ruben Lira in his vehicle. Lira told police they drove around the house several times before heading to a Stripes south of there on Chadbourne. While Lira was in the Stripes purchasing two drinks and a candy bar, Lira said McGhee stayed outside. The video surveillance police reviewed do not show McGhee, the affidavit states.
Lira told police as the two were traveling south on Chadbourne from the Stripes, fire trucks with lights and sirens were speeding north.
McGhee was booked into the Tom Green County Jail Friday morning accused of possessing one to four grams of cocaine and between four and 200 grams of meth.
Chadwick was arrested the day of the murder on a traffic charge and bonded out later that day. Yesterday, police arrested him again, charging him with family violence. That kept him in jail until the investigation was finished. Thursday night, however, police charged him with two counts of murder of Jared and Chubby. He sits in the county jail on a $2 million bond.
51st District Attorney Allison Palmer signed Chadwick’s arrest affidavit.

March 22, 2019 - 4:25 p.m.: We incorrectly stated Jack "Chubby" Harris was sent to prison for murder based upon 2 erroneous reports. The Tom Green County Jail logs indicate he was transferred to TDCJ after an arrest for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon charge. The story is corrected.

PermalinkSounds like all parties involved were/ are fine upstanding role models for all the young folks. Live the thug life and this is not an untypical result.
I particularly liked the character witness stating "he was the most well-behaved drunk Jared I have ever seen him." I guess that's something.....

PermalinkTypical yellow journalism. Shameful tactic to discredit the victims. You wrote as if these murders were justifiable as you color the victims in a very negative light. Shame on you. I want to remind everyone that article was written with half truths and San Angelo Live should be held accountable. I hope when you leave this world, your family is shown the respect you should have shown these families and loved ones.

PermalinkThe past is the past. Jared is loved and missed so dearly. Shame on your editors to use his past as a means to justify the loss of his life.. It really shows how low the members of SA Live are. Have some dang compassion... no mother should have to bury their kid. This case is truly devestating.

Guess the parole board should have reminded him that if you lay with dogs, you'll get up with fleas...... And man did he find a pack of flea infested dogs to lay with......

PermalinkHe's been laying with dogs for 28 years. Do you think he would come home without fleas? That's why TDCJ needs to concentrate on rehabilitation. 95 % of all those incarcerated return to their communities. I'd rather have someone in my neighborhood that's been rehabilitated, rather than one that returns covered in 'fleas'. Elect officials that support rehabilitation, not mass incarceration.

PermalinkWhat is wrong with you people!? These two men were MURDERED! The family is grieving. Do you not have any respect? These men have children. Your accusations assumptions and pure gossip is a disgrace! I guess none of you have ever made mistakes? You are all perfect then? I don't think so! Joe Hyde you are a joke and you should be fired! Jared Lohse was not the man you portray him to be in this bashing you call an article! He was a very kind hearted loving caring young man who was a good father to his children who he loved dearly. He was not only a great friend to me he was family. This one-sided gossip and assumption filled article should be removed. Not even two sentences about the man who MURDERED these two men..did you look at his record? No you evidentally didn't. This absolutely makes me sick at my stomach and all of you who think you are God and can judge someone just because of something you heard should be ashamed of your selves. No matter what a person has done in there passed people can change. Jared Lohse was a good man and if any of you knew him at all you would known that. He did not deserve to die and neither did Chubby. What gives you the right to disrespect these men and there family's. May God forgive you all! And I happen to be one of those flea infested dogs as you put it so if you have something negative to say about either one of these two men.. Jared or Chubby come say it to me or keep your dam negative trash talking to your self ...dont put this shit out there for these men's family's to have to see..have a little bit of decency!

PermalinkThis is such a sad sad situation, everyone has a past and we ALL make mistakes! No need to put their past out there like that, have compassion and pray for the families of these men. Shame on the writer of this article if it were your child I'm sure you would not want anyone talking about them like that. Prayers for everyone, there seems to be no respect for those that pass away!! Were all equal in the eyes of The Lord, no one is better then the other. God bless

PermalinkI realize emotions are high for the people that knew these two men, but what's reported here is a matter of public record. Reporting what's in a police report or someone's criminal record is not slandering their good name. These guys had a bad past and they did that themselves. THAT is the reality of the situation. Does that mean they deserved to be murdered? NO. I'm sorry to their family and friends. What you're going through is rough and you have my condolences. Please don't take it out on people who are merely reporting the news.

PermalinkWow. I'm sure from your 'opinion' that you are sqeaky clean. Never said a curse word, obviously have a master's degree, non-judgmental, honest-never even told a white lie, law abiding- not even a parking ticket, humble, kind and such a compassionate Christian person you are. And how are you related to her almighty da alison palmer(sorry, not deserving of capital letters)? When my daughter was murdered because a criminal was released thanks to San Angelo's competent judicial system and wonderful policing. The trash that killed my baby girl was stopped for a traffic violation, yet not so much as a ticket was issued. He was on probation for a drive by shooting, and despite being arrested again for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, was allowed to continue driving under the influence and with stolen guns in the car. The ignorant reporting on the case produced multiple opinions from educated citizens such as yourself about how they were all drug addicts. As if loosing my only child wasn't vile enough, people like you made an indescribable and hellish nightmare even worse. The media was unable to trash her because she didn't have a record. She came from a middle class home. Oh, and to all your educated opinions, there were no drugs in my daughters system. But, please continue, as you are a shining example of the immoral and egotistical conscience, or lack of, that san angelo citizens are known for.

PermalinkThis convoluted and muddled rant of yours, stems from what you perceived to be the libelous and prejudiced opinions, following the "ignorant reporting" of your daughter's murder. I'm sorry, but we seem to be discussing apples and oranges here, though what I can gather from your post, is that you think death absolves one of all misdeeds, past or present. I'll probably be one of the first to be honest enough to inform you, it does not.
I'm not familiar with your daughter's case, though I am acquainted with the known facts of this one: a couple of career criminals got their lights put out, by a fellow career criminal, who swam in the same cesspool of peers as the deceased. The charges and convictions cited about the deceased in question were not made up, nor were they embellished for the sake of "click bait", by San Angelo LIVE!. What we have here, in this article, are a handful of documented, inconvenient truths about a really foul element within our city, that many of us are simply fed up with.
On the other hand, I feel I'm preaching to a member of the choir, as I'd agree with you, wholeheartedly, that the man who took your daughter's life, may have been prevented from doing so, had a judge or two had the fortitude to put the animal away, for a lot longer, much sooner. Things like this can be prevented, but we'll unfortunately see this cycle repeat itself, as with the ongoing saga of this Ortiz clown, who walked free a day after gunning down a man in his backyard, only to be thrown in jail, days later, and allegedly overheard discussing a desire to kill his wife.
Opinions don't make things true. Actions, and facts derived from actions, do. If you gain anything at all from my reply, please make a mental note of this.
For your information, I curse frequently, with bite. I'm college educated, though no master's, however, as any sentient, logical human being, I personally judge those who I encounter on a daily basis, and will continue to do so, as my life and all I value depends on this innate faculty.
"Only God can judge me" -- a popular phrase and mantra of the criminal element, and a very hopeful sentiment, at that, as these types thrive on the naivety and gullibility of the general public, to throw caution to superstition, and overlook their misdeeds. For all my faults and imperfections, I could never intentionally make the dire mistake of buying into such chimerical fancies.
I'll recognize a bad apple when I see one. If you, like a handful of the posters here need to ultimately taste the rot and lament the sight of the half eaten worm to experience the obvious, maybe you deserve the bitter taste and sour stomach which follows.
I do not value the opinions of those who readily defend the actions of criminals, nor do I value the opinions of those who defend others, who readily defend the actions of criminals. For all it's worth, the criminal's apologists are as much a part of the problem as the criminals themselves.
You painted the people of San Angelo with a pretty broad brush there, Karen, and to boot, lent credence to the actions of your daughter's killer, by way of your haste and persistence in determining that we're all simply misjudging the actions and demonstrable psychopathies of dangerous and useless individuals.

PermalinkDid you ever learn that if you cannot say something good about someone don't say anything at all? I get it you report the news and you have access to police reports in order to do it. I will never know if what you reported on these two is 100% correct unless I see the police report but some of your comments are hateful, rude, upsetting and paints a whole new picture in peoples minds especially the parents and family of these two. I am sorry but your comment of "burned to a crisp" is totally uncalled for. Obviously, if they were murdered and left in a burning house there bodies don't look too good. But to put that picture in people's mind is so disrespectful. You Joe, owe all the family members and apology on San Angelo Live and in person. Remember God is the final judge and he's watching you. It does no matter how many degrees you have it was not appreciated by anyone. You listed all the things that Chubby and Jared did the night before, what about the fact that Dwayne also has a record. Nothing was mentioned about him. He had just gotten out of jail before he did this. If your reporting is so good (we know they were shot) but you don't mention a gun or why a felon had a gun. Must of slipped you mind. These two boys were the children of someone's mom and dad, had children of there on, they were cousins, Uncles and Nephews to someone. You have no compassion. If you did you would meet with the mom's of the kids , apologize and here their side of the story. If that happens we will all know about it as you will print it . Lots a people have criminal records and bet you have someone who you consider a friend. Not all of them are bad people. Giving 2nd and 3rd chances is a wonderful thing. After that and they continue in there ways you still pray. I know they had Jared's funeral on Monday the 25th, but Chubby has yet been laid to rest. Money is the object as it would be with most of us so maybe you should think about making a donation to Shaffer Funeral home in order to help the family as some people have done. Now let me see you report on Dwayne Chadwick. If he makes his bail for some reason the next letter will be to the Judge who set the bond!

PermalinkI'm wondering what the probability of being shot in the face actually is. I'm leaning towards the opinion that Someone Who is working for a living, not on Meth, has a way lower chance of catching 2 bullets in the face than Someone kicking in doors, robbing People. I'm not saying These Guys deserved to die, I'm just wondering how many doors a Man expects to be able to kick in before Someone with a gun is behind one.

PermalinkI don't know about San Angelo Live's coverage being an issue as much as garbage retorts from several of the people frequenting the "rant" section.
Guys like this, "Lares" get in here and thrive as only a keyboard warrior could. If you are friends or family to either of the deceased, don't let these judgemental comments bother you, as you can plainly see, their conviction's aren't as strong as they make them out to be. You don't see these type of guys spreading that nonsense at the viewing or gravesite for any of these guys that have a past... Instead, they shout loudly from behind a keyboard and screen, using their intellect to gain "superiority" over folks who don't dedicate hours of their life to editing "pieces" for the rant section in order to disrespect or belittle those who believe in and value the gift of forgiveness.
Who was it that said something about your conviction's not being worth much if they don't cause you to do something? I don't know, but they were right. I 'm a proponent of forgiveness and I think ours would be a sick and sad world without it... We would all think like Lares does, soon giving way the the likes of crabs in a bucket.
Let the coward continue in his ways, we can just pray that he will know one day what it is to need forgiveness, such a proud fool is sure to fall soon.

PermalinkThe overabundance of forgiveness, where and with whom it is not deserved, is what keeps the world "sick and sad".
Spare me your sanctimonious bullshit. There are countless individuals with entire adult lifetimes dedicated to victimizing others, some until they're finally stopped, after seriously hurting someone, screwing someone's kid or worse.
Unceasing forgiveness at the expense of public safety? I think not.

PermalinkWhat was it you said to Karen in your earlier rant? Apples and oranges? You have nothing with which to show that either of the two deceased were participating in any illegal activity when they were shot, and you have no reason to disrespect the dead and their families to stroke your own ego.
You behave like a filthy internet goblin... I don't expect you to do anything other than what you have been doing, I swear, self righteous bigots are more palatable than the likes of you. I could be wrong, but I imagine a large majority of the people who can read these comments have done things that they wouldn't like to be publicized on here, including you, and yet here you are, trash talking groups of people who you wouldn't have the brass to confront anywhere but the safety of the internet.
Keep it up though, you might be able to masturbate your opinion enough to run off everyone but those who think like you. Boys who haven't developed any real life experience act like that, maybe that's the nail on the head. You are a boy who lacks the very virtue that you accuse everyone else of lacking, what is that called? Projection? I would expect that with a college education, you would at least have learned to respect people who don't think like you.
A real man respects others, lives with honor and integrity, and understands that life is more than a subjective experience used to smear others... May God forgive you for the things you say, and may you one day forsake the very words and attitudes you expressed for the public to see. Till then, what you say is selfish and disgusting.
A fool is considered wise if he controls his tongue, but when he speaks without discernment, he removes all doubt... Keep on "ranting" buddy, nobody shares your exact view on these things.

It doesn't matter how bad it looks in front of everyone. Time has passed, and while those words irrevocably WERE exchanged between you two, you've chosen to be the bigger person and run away from the fight. It's like when Lancelot slept with King Arthur's wife. That's what Lares has metaphorically done to you here with words. You're the bigger person, Honor.
