San Angelo Police Respond to 30 Wrecks After Latest Round of Ice

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The frozen rain and iced roadways kept the San Angelo Police Department busy on Wednesday.

According to Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez, San Angelo PD responded to 30 wrecks in San Angelo during the inclement weather. The first wreck happened just before 8 a.m. at the intersection of South Chadbourne St. and Christoval Road. The latest wreck happened at 2:18 p.m. at 4505 South Bryant Blvd.

Those numbers do not include wrecks where agencies like the Texas Department of Public Safety or the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office were called. However, police were called to assist the public or other agencies twice during this patch of wintry weather.

The first time was in response to a wreck at the intersection of N. US Highway 87 and Chadbourne. The second call was to assist an elderly woman get in her house. According to Officer Gonzalez, the woman had just installed a new access ramp to make getting into her house easier. But the ice had frozen over in the weather. So, officers assisted the lady into her house.

Police were also called 14 times to assist getting motorists and vehicles off the roadway.

The weather isn't expected to let up overnight with another round of freezing rain and a wintry mix forecasted Wednesday night between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. Thursday morning. Because of that, the San Angelo office of the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory until 6 a.m. Thursday morning.

The NWS urges drivers to use the utmost caution if they are forced to drive during this weather.

What a bunch of light weight idiots wrecking out in such minor amounts of ice.... I'd hate to see what these fools in this town would do on the roads if we did have a quarter of an inch layer of ice covering the roads.......
