SAN ANGELO, TX -- A San Angelo man who threatened to shoot at police officers and set his house on fire had been charged with attempted capital murder of a peace officer or fireman, aggravated assault of a public servant and arson with intent to damage a structure took a plea deal Tuesday that sends him to prison for 25 years.
As previously reported, Gary Wright called David Wagner with KLST and KSAN and said he was about to have a standoff with police; he advised Wagner to "get their cameras ready."
Wright pointed a gun at police officers in a threatening manner and officers shot him. He was transported to the hospital and then later taken to jail.
On Tuesday, Wright accepted a plea deal that dismissed the attempted capital murder charge in exchange for a guilty plea on the other two counts.
District Judge Ben Woodward accepted Wright's plea and sentenced him to 25 years on one count of aggravated assault of a public servant and 25 years on one count of arson with intent to damage a structure.
The sentences will run concurrently. Wright was also ordered to pay court costs and $6,102.63 in restitution.
Wright was given credit for time served. He has been in custody since Jan. 13, 2017.
Brenda Joyce Wright took a plea deal earlier and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

They are not criminals. I think they just came to their wits end.
I have been around Gary and never saw him to be anything but a nice hard working guy.
I don't know all about the problems and hard times they had to deal with.
I do not think he would have shot anyone.
The prison time they received is way to much.
A deviant child molester gets only 12 years.
The dopers and thieves and full bore career criminals do not even receive anything close to this sentence.
It's just sad.

PermalinkThere is NEVER ANY justification to coordinate a plan like that to have the media film you murdering police and firemen. It doesnt matter how hard your struggle is. Attempting to murder others instead of seeking out the support of friends/family/church will yield the results they should. And as far as his “TOO MUCH” prison sentence the DA ahouldnt have taken yet another ridiculous plea deal
Both of them should have been tried for capital murder and put away forever.
There is ALWAYS a safer and logical solution to any problem. Don't try to justify this .
