Voter Turnout a Whopping 20 percent with Five Days of Early Voting and Election Day Remaining

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Tom Green County voters continue to stream to the polls in record numbers Monday with five days of early voting remaining for the Nov. 6 general election.

13,035 of the county’s 67,007 registered voters have already cast ballots and that’s just under 20 percent turnout.  

Most voters have traveled downtown to the elections office in the Keyes building to vote, but over 3,000 also stopped by the PAYS alternative learning center on Knickerbocker Rd.

Record setting early voting is occurring across the state according to the Secretary of State’s Office.  Almost three million votes have been cast statewide in the first six days of early voting.

Interest in and passion about the race for U.S. Senator have driven voters to the polls in record numbers across the state according to the Secretary of State’s office.  Incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz is facing a tough challenge from Democrat Beto O’Rourke of El Paso. The former congressman has raised tens of millions of dollars and has traveled to all 254 counties in Texas.  

Senator Cruz will make a campaign stop in San Angelo Tuesday evening.  Organizers say Cruz will hold a campaign rally at The Life Church, 3301 TLC Way from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.  The event is free but tickets are required to attend. Cruz has visited San Angelo twice during the campaign. O’Rourke has campaigned in San Angelo at least four times.

There are two contested races locally and the San Angelo ISD bond propositions generating interest as well.  

Incumbent Republican Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Susan Werner is challenged by Democrat Sally Ayana.  

Incumbent Republican Pct. 4 Tom Green County Commissioner Bill Ford is challenged by write-in candidate Gilbert Gallegos.  

The San Angelo ISD has two bond proposals on the ballot.  Proposition A is for $111 million and would provide for security improvements and new classrooms for elementary and middle schools.  Proposition B would provide funding for a new 3,000 seat gymnasium at Central High School and a new field house facility at Lake View High School.  A similar bond proposal failed by two votes in May.  

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is also on the ballot.  The first term Republican is challenged by Democrat Lupe Valdez, the former sheriff of Dallas County.  Abbott leads by double digits and will be in San Angelo Wednesday at the Concho Pearl Ice House,1605 S. Chadbourne, from 2 pm. To 4 p.m.

Early voting hours Monday through Friday this week are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the five early voting locations which include the Elections office in the Keyes Building at 113 W. Beauregard, Central High School’s Barnhardt Theatre 655 Caddo, PAYS school 1820 Knickerbocker Rd., Lincoln Middle School 255 Lake View Heroes Dr., and the Christoval Community Center 20022 Main St. in Christoval.  

There will be 19 polling locations open on election day next Tuesday Nov. 6 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
