ODESSA, TX -- A federal prison inmate in custody of U.S. Marshals somehow managed to wrestle a gun away from a prison guard and shoot himself in an Odessa, TX hospital Monday.
According to a press release, the inmate was being treated at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa when he fatally shot himself.
The Wednesday press release identified the inmate as Andres Rios, 26, of Midland. He was being detained by the Ector County Correctional Center and was hospitalized at Medical Center Hospital following a failed suicide attempt.
The release stated Rios assaulted, overpowered and disarmed one of two Ector County Correctional Center Officers posted at the hospital. After gaining control of the officer’s firearm, Rios used the gun to commit suicide.
The Texas Rangers and the Ector County Medical Examiner are handling the investigation. The United States Marshals Service is in the process of reviewing performance and procedures of the Ector County Correctional Center.
The center is a privately-managed prison located in the Ector County Courthouse.
According to MCH, the shooting occurred Monday at 4:13 p.m. The patient died around 6 p.m.
No hospital workers or law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Is a bit harsh, don't you think? Obviously the guy needed help.

Permalink... a prison riot broke out between two rival gangs. These inmates are genuine garbage eating "favela-dwellers" -- so they tend to skip the trash can fires and overflowing toilet tricks, and move right onto live dismemberment and cannibalism.
After a handful of guards were torn to pieces, authorities (on the other side of the walls) decided to lock the doors and wait until the animals either got tired or murdering each other, or ran out of fellow inmates to BBQ.
Bad people doing bad things to themselves. Small victories.
