SAN ANGELO, TX -- Tom Green County Sheriff's Deputies have identified the suspects involved in the early Saturday morning high speed chase from Carlsbad to downtown San Angelo.
According to TGSO Deputy Zachary Davis' report, he was patrolling in Carlsbad just before midnight when he began attempting to stop a 1999 Ford Contour for a defective license plate light when the chase began.
Davis reports he attempted to stop the vehicle but it began speeding reaching speeds over 100 mph heading south on U.S. Highway 87 toward San Angelo.
San Angelo Police were notified and blocked intersections beginning at 29th St. and N. Bryant but the driver of the suspect vehicle bypassed the road blocks.
Deputy Davis reports he followed the Ford through downtown and then was about to stop the pursuit when he saw the vehicle attempt to turn onto West Washington Drive when the driver apparently lost control and crashed into a tree.
Davis said he saw a female get out of the passenger side of the crashed car and sit down in the driveway.
The TGSO deputy identified the female suspect as Stephanie Chapoy. He cuffed her and searched her. During the search, Chapoy admitted that she had a weapon.
Davis found a set silver knuckles with a skull insignia. Silver or brass knuckles are an illegal weapon. Chapoy was arrested for possession of a prohibited weapon.
Davis read Chapoy her Miranda Rights and she agreed to waive them and answer his questions.
Chapoy admitted that Kenny Cansler was the driver of the vehicle. The deputy knew that Cansler was the registered owner of the car.
Deputy Davis then searched the vehicle. He found suspected drugs and a black Bersa .380 handgun and a .25 cal handgun, and a Llama-Gabilondo 7.65 cal handgun.
The search also revealed a red backpack with ammunition for the handguns along with several knives.
The vehicle search also revealed suspected methamphetamine and illegal prescription drugs.
Kenny Cansler remains at large.
The investigation has been turned over to the TGCSO Criminal Investigation Division.
