Record Breaking 108 Degrees Bakes San Angelo Thursday with More on the Way

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The National Weather Service Office at Mathis Field recorded the highest temperature for July 19 since records began being kept Thursday.  

According to the NWS, San Angelo has easily broken the record high temperature for today, hitting 108 degrees.

The old record high temperature for July 19 was 105 degrees set in 1951 before global warming was theorized and matched again in the severe drought year of 2011.

And there is more record breaking heat on the way.  

Dangerously hot temperatures will continue to affect the area through this weekend, with afternoon high temperatures between 103 and 108 degrees expected.

This prolonged period of hot weather will increase the risk for heat related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Take extra precautions; if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency call 9 1 1.

The Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory continue through Sunday afternoon, with afternoon highs Saturday and Sunday well above usual for July.

Afternoon highs from 105 to 108 will be common. For Monday afternoon highs will continue in the triple digits so the Excessive Heat Warning and Heat Advisory may be extended into Monday.

The long term forecast for the remainder of the summer is hot and dry.
