Local Reaction to Justice Kennedy's Retirement

SAN ANGELO, TX -- United States Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s sudden retirement gives President Donald Trump a second pick to the high court in a move that will almost certainly move the nation’s highest court toward the conservative right.

Kennedy announced his planned retirement Wednesday in a letter to President Trump.  Trump’s first appointment was conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch. Kennedy’s retirement comes after both Gorsuch and Kennedy were key votes in two controversial decisions this week -- upholding Trump's 'travel ban' and ruling against union's 'fair share' fees. Both decisions were 5-4.

Tom Green County Republican Party Chairman Jeff Betty Wednesday praised Justice Kennedy and is hopeful the President will nominate another conservative jurist to the SCOTUS.

“Justice Kennedy will go down in history as a pivotal figure in American History.  As a swing vote in many critical cases Justice Kennedy played a key role in defining government’s role and the breadth of its power in society.” said Betty.

“An appointee of Ronald Reagan he refused to apply ideological political positions to resolve cases often to the dismay of both political parties.  I am hopeful his replacement will be as influential in limiting government overreach and preserving the rule of law.”

Tom Green County Democratic Party Chairman David Currie was disappointed Kennedy decided to step down. Currie was still sore that the final Supreme Court pick of President Barrack Obama, Merrick Garland, wasn’t confirmed by the Republican-controlled U.S. Senate. “What [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell did was simply un-American,” Currie said. McConnell refused to allow Garland’s appointment to be considered by the Senate in 2016 after Donald Trump was elected president.

“I’m a balanced guy,” Currie said. “I would like to see the appointment be from the mainstream of American life. Extremes, either right or left, are never profitable for this country.”

Although Currie is resigned to the fact that Trump will nominate a second Supreme Court justice, he doesn’t see the two pivotal issues of our generations changing at all.

“I think Trump could appoint all nine Supreme Court justices and Roe vs. Wade will remain the law of the land,” he said. Roe vs. Wade is the 1972 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the U.S.

Likewise, Currie said, the Second Amendment, and gun rights that go along with it, would remain the law of the land, had President Obama selected all nine justices.

“The right to own a gun or have an abortion will not change in my lifetime, or my grandkids’ lifetime, no matter who is on the court,” he said. “And I am pro-life. People voting solely on those two issues are throwing their votes away.”

Currie said issues like gerrymandering keep him up at night. Those kinds of issues will have a greater impact than what the Supremes may do with the Second Amendment, he said. For example, in Wisconsin, Currie claimed that Democrats received seven percent more votes, but Republicans still control the state house there with a 60 of 99-seat majority. The Supreme Court sent that case back to a Wisconsin district court last week.

President’s Trump’s nominee will have to be confirmed by the Senate and could be done as early as this fall.  Supreme Court Justices are appointed for life.

Roe v Wade is definitely in the cross-hair's, despite the fact that it's a "social norm", in our society, that's why the left's media began to babble about it as soon as Kennedy's retirement was announced. Extremist's even took to social outlet's saying that the wrong Kennedy was assassinated... Really? That's the method you use? I thought that you guys represented "tolerance", and that so, above the degree to which conservative Christian's practice such.

Anyway, I'm to the point that I don't care what people think anymore, unless it line's up with what God says. I'm aware that people will disagree with God's word and all that He has decreed... No surprise there...

Our immigration policy is one that should be honored. We are the most lenient Country on issues with our border... Go ahead, research it. We have the most open-handed, open-hearted immigration policy on earth. I don't agree as much with Trump as I do with God, and that's who set up our people and boundaries on earth... Boundaries are from God, not man's idea. Acts 17:26. I expect the talking points to continue, I expect the opposition to remain, but I lose no sleep at night over the "so-called" plight of those seeking to illegally enter our Country. I've known people right here in San Angelo, who's stories have disturbed me on a much deeper level.

The greatest accusation's and slander, won't change the mind's of those who believe in God and America... We'll probably see violence come from the side of those who claim to be tolerant and open-minded, over issues in the world before we deliver it, in word or in deed. Just don't bring the fight to me, and I won't have to use my God-given right to defend myself and family.

Jesus is a respecter of boundaries... Rev. 3:20

Mr. Mason...

Donald Trump is poisoning this country and changing it into a place that no longer warrants the honor it so beautifully earned in the past. He and his toadies promulgate fear, distrust, misdirection regarding the problems the country faces, destruction of norms that have worked well in the past, and even corruption of religious mores. He and they have richly earned a place in hell.

We will all suffer as a result of their actions.

Assuming you are sincere, I salute you. Battle on. I wish you luck.

Haven't you heard Cajun... This is the popular, new left wing strategy... When it's not "point, counterpoint, RACIST!" It quickly jump's to "Toadies, deplorable's, and hell-goer's."

Not sure where folks feel like that's going to get anyone to listen, but their tactic does do one thing, it divert's the attention from the realities.

I don't know, the left has been ignoring conservative veiwpoint's for quite some time now... Since, '73 on abortion, and that's not just a policy battle, it's human life... 60+ Million of them to be exact, and people have the gall to compare America to Nazi Germany concerning our immigration policy... We missed the mark on that comparison, but far surpassed it on abortion... Maybe, the will of the people will come to reap a harvest, it has been a long time.
