Fatal Crash Reported on SH 158 at SH 137 Near Garden City

GARDEN CITY, TX — A witness of the crash called to report what he saw happen late Wednesday morning at the intersection of SH 158 and SH 137.

According to the witness’s observation, a white pickup not pictured in the photos was westbound on SH 158. “Clearly, about 30-50 yards before he entered that intersection, that light was red,” the witness said.

The driver of the white pickup ran the red light, barely missing an 18-wheeler that was traveling across the intersection northbound on SH 137. Behind the 18-wheeler, also northbound on SH 137, was the gray Ford F-250 (or F-350) (pictured). The white truck T-boned that truck then barrowed across all of the lanes of traffic, hitting an eastbound 18-wheeler waiting at the light.

“The light there is on a straight-away where the speed limit is 75 mph. Something needs to be done about the safety aspects of that,” our witness said.

The man pictured being treated by other motorists was not dead, the witness said. Someone found a sheet to help calm the guy, who was the driver of the gray pickup. Once EMS arrived, he was rushed to a hospital with incapacitating injuries.

According to the witness, the driver of the white pickup jumped into another vehicle and left the scene. We have no other verification of this other than what the witness told us.

All we have as of Thursday morning are unofficial eyewitness reports. We will update this story with the official DPS report once we receive it.

Midland’s CBS 7 reported the crash at 12:40 p.m. The crash, they reported, had traffic backed up leaving Midland towards Garden City. By 2:30 p.m., CBS 7 reported the crash scene had been cleared.

The speed limit on 158 at that intersection is 65 mph, not 75. There are warning signs in both directions that you are coming up on a traffic signal. There is no excuse for running a red light.

The driver of the white pick up did not flee the scene. He was speaking to troopers after the accident. They were trying to get him to go via ambulance to Big Springs and he wanted to go Midland. A family member picked him up and brought him to Midland to be examined. Story needs to be corrected.

But was there a fatality as reported. Not much follow up on these stories! I dont read or listen to any other news in this town
