Legally Blind Diabetic Man Sentenced to Prison for Harassing a Public Servant

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Isaac Lee Wells, 37, broke down beside his attorney Rudy Taylor in court late Monday afternoon after being sentenced to eight years in prison for harassment of a public servant.   

A jury on Friday found Wells guilty of two counts of harassment of a public servant.  He was accused of spitting blood on two police officers who were responding to a call of a suicidal subject in May 2017.  

Wells testified he and his girlfriend had been arguing at his mother’s house when his sister called police.  Police arrived and questioned Wells, who has severe diabetes and was severely injured in a three story fall off of scaffolding in 2012. He was working on a construction crew at Goodfellow Air Force Base at the time.  His injuries included a head injury with a concussion, a broken arm and leg, and loss of eyesight.  Wells said he has no vision in his right eye and only 45 percent vision in his left eye.

Police were called a second time to the house by Well’s mother who testified that he was suicidal.  Police cuffed him and spat blood on the two officers.  

Wells testified that he and his girlfriend had been up for several days taking meth and other drugs.  

Prosecuting attorneys began the morning by calling ten corrections officers from the Tom Green County Jail to testify against Wells.  Wells had been jailed for resisting arrest and assault.  Prosecutors presented evidence that Wells had been jailed over 20 times for felony and misdemeanor charges.  

He was involved in a fight in jail and corrections officers tased him on two separate occasions to get him to comply with their orders.  

Wells' mother and sister took the stand telling Judge Weatherby he was not a violent or bad person. His behavior was because of his abusive childhood and he had drug addiction along with his eyesight and diabetes, they testified.  

After considering the testimony and evidence, Weatherby said, “We are not in here today because of the decisions I have to make; we are here because of your decisions.”  The judge then sentenced Wells to eight years on each of the two counts of harassment of a public servant.  

When the judge pronounced sentence, Wells broke down on the stand, failing to comply with the judge’s order to stand.  Well’s flung himself around so much that the bailiff had to physically sit him back down in his chair.  Wells turned to his mother who was sitting behind him in court, sobbing and saying, “I’m sorry mama.  I’m sorry Mama!”

Wells' sentence began Monday with credit for time served.
