AMARILLO, TX -- The Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees will discuss renaming Robert E. Lee Elementary School on Monday, according to board president Jim Austin.
Like all agenda items, Austin said the board could take action on renaming the school during its regular meeting. Lee Elementary, which is named for the Confederate general and located in a historically black neighborhood, was first discussed by the AISD board in closed session during its Sept. 14 meeting, according to Amarillo-Globe News.
Austin told the Globe-News on Friday that after that session the board decided to continue doing some "homework." Austin said its time for an open discussion of renaming the school dedicated to Lee in 1952 after continuing to meet with the NAACP and other Amarillo residents about the issue.
Floyd Anthony, president of the Amarillo branch of the NAACP, said he is "hopeful" the board will vote in favor of changing the name of the school that is located at 119 N.E. 15th Avenue.
The hopes are to change the name to Park Hills Elementary, after the neighborhood. "We're always pleased when we can work together for the common good of the community," Anthony told Globe-News. "I'm hopeful they will vote in favor of the name change. I think it would be a very popular move on the part of AISD."
As reported before here, San Angelo ISD has no plans to rename Robert E. Lee Middle School.

It would be like having to stomach the name, Benedict Arnold Middle School. Both traitors and losers.

PermalinkI am sick and tired of the left going after historical statues, places and names. We should be proud to have an elementary named after Robert E. Lee. The only graduate of West Point to do so with out a demerit and whose tactics are still taught there. Not only do I live in this neighborhood, I and am most of my neighbors are not black. We should also be proud of some one who fought for states rights, just look at what Big Government has done to us!
