SAN ANGELO, TX-- On Sunday the National Weather Service issued a Winter Weather Advisory for San Angelo and most of the Concho Valley ahead of the arrival of another arctic cold front.
Temperatures behind the front are expected to dip down into teens. Blistery winds could send the wind chill near zero degrees.
The front is also expected to bring as much as half an inch of ice and snow to portions of the Concho Valley. However, Patrick McCullogh of the NWS said they feel those high totals will be primarily in the southeastern part of the Concho Valley.
McCullogh said the front is coming through sooner than planned and that means the ground temperatures will cool down sooner and make conditions favorable for ice accumulation.
San Angelo, as well as the rest of Tom Green County, is expected to get up to a quarter of an inch of ice and a light dusting of snow according to McCullogh.
On Monday night San Angelo is looking at a 30% chance of snow. Winds are expected to be sustained at 27 mph with a low of 24 degrees.
On Tuesday, the high temperature will struggle to get above the freezing mark at 32 degrees and the low is forecasted at 18.
The NWS has alerted school districts, The Texas Department of Transportation, and law enforcement on what to watch out for with this weather.
TXDOT has already taken action with possible trouble spots on roads around San Angelo.

I (stupidly) had a long drive from the Fort Worth area to West Texas during the last cold snap. I had read where TexDot had prepared the bridges and overpasses...plus they had put down some kinds of slush in anticipation of freezing drizzle. Well, I never found any of that and I went over plenty of bridges and overpasses that were frozen solid. I did see one sanding truck and it was riding around in town...never dropped a grain of sand. I saw plenty of wrecks because of the icy road conditions. Friends told me the Tex-Dot drivers didn't like to drive their trucks on icy roads....maybe that is it, but I think an evaluation of current processes is needed...lets see how it works out.

PermalinkI guess all that road prep scared the moisture away. Not a drop. And it has been taken out of the forecast. What gives? are we in a drought or something? Some are saying so.
