The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Four Concho Valley Teams Remain Unbeaten After Week 6

Week six in the Concho Valley was not a good one in terms of the combined record for area teams, as they went a 8-11 combined last week. Granted, four games pitted two area teams against each other which makes that record kind of lopsided. But it was a good week for Central (5-0, 1-0), Mason (6-0), Sonora (6-0), and Wall (5-0) who remained undefeated past the halfway mark in the season.

The Good: Sonora and Wall stay red-hot

It's a wonderful sight when two area teams are playing as well as these two teams have been. Wall defeated Iowa Park 42-14 on Friday while Sonora beat Iraan 39-7.

Wall's offense looked almost as good as it has all season in the win, putting up 517 yards of total offense. The Hawks threw for 97 of those yards. Seniors Casey Braden, Tymber Carr and Brock Rosenquist all rushed for over 100 yards. Carr racked up 122 yards and a team high two touchdowns in the win. Braden led the team in rushing yards with 145 and one touchdown. Rosenquist also tallied a touchdown through the air for Wall.

Sonora's defense may have played their best game this season, allowing just one touchdown for Iraan. Offensively, it was much of the same for the Broncos who had 392 yards of offense. Senior Quarterback Kaden Cordell put up 311 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns for Sonora. Fellow senior Jarret Jackson put up an even split of 81 yards receiving and rushing to give him 162 total yards of offense on the night. Jackson also racked up three scores in the victory.

Wall will open up district play seeking their seventh consecutive district title when they travel to Grape Creek (0-6) this Friday. Sonora will have a bye week this week before opening it's district schedule next Friday, Oct. 20, with a road game against Alpine (4-2).

The Bad: Slow start again for Central's offense in win

The Central Bobcats beat Odessa High 38-20 on Friday thanks to solid defensive play and 35 unanswered points, 28 of which came in the second half. In the first half against Odessa, Central ran just 19 plays, almost half of the 36 plays ran by the Bronchos. That game didn't start looking like it was going to go Central's way until the second half when the Bobcats were the beneficiary of a couple of Broncho fumbles. The slow start marked the second time in consecutive games that Central's offense struggled in the first half. While good defensive play can keep a team in a game, the Bobcat offense will need to play a full game this Friday when the Midland Lee Rebels (6-0, 2-0) try to invade San Angelo Stadium this Friday.

The Ugly: Sterling City gets mercy-ruled by defending State Champs Richland Springs

Sterling City went into Friday's game ranked seventh in the state and with a chip on their shoulder against Richland Springs, who beat Sterling City by a combined score of 94-0 in their previous two meetings. The Eagles had a good team going into the season, but a season-ending knee injury to All-State Fullback and Defensive End Brenden Sisco may have hampered the Eagles in this game. Richland Springs lost four of their six starters from the team that won state in 2016, so there was a question as to what kind of defense Richland Springs could put together. Behind Walker Tippie's 163 yards and three touchdowns, the Coyotes won 56-6 via the mercy-rule. The win was a huge statement from Richland Springs. Before Friday night, Richland Springs was 1-1 in 2017 against UIL opponents while playing three private schools over their first five games. The season opener for Richland Springs was a disappointing one in a 96-74 loss to Happy. Maybe Richland is finally back to their winning ways. Sterling City (3-3) will take on Follett in Lockney this Friday while Richland Springs (5-1) will face another private school in Fort Worth THESA at home this Friday.

As a bonus 'Ugly' in week six, I figured I would include Oklahoma's home loss to Iowa State and their third-string quarterback. I mean, c'mon. It was a third-string quarterback. I thought Oklahoma Quarterback Baker Mayfield was supposed to be a Heisman candidate? Heisman winners don't lose to Iowa State.
