SAN ANGELO, TX — A major crash on U.S. 67 in front of Howard College just happened. All northbound lanes are closed, as San Angelo Police attempt to manage a very bad crash scene, as of 12:40 a.m. Sunday morning.
Involved is a truck and horse trailer. There may be fatalities, including the a fatality of a horse.
We are at the scene and will provide updates as they are available.
Update 1:37 a.m.
One person was killed early Sunday morning in a single vehicle crash. According to San Angelo police, a northbound Ram pickup towing a horse trailer careened out of control in front of Howard College on U.S. 67 in the northbound lanes.
SAPD traffic investigator Cade Solsbery said the truck struck a streetlight in the center median and then continued ahead to strike a pole holding a traffic signal.
Solsbery said the driver is dead, and so is one horse that was in the horse trailer. A second horse was located a quarter mile north of the crash scene. The condition of the horse is unknown, as first responders are tending to it.

Would you believe that's exactly how they said it over the radio? We heard it on a scanner at work when it happened.

An officer did or who? Normally we say something like, driver is 42 or possibly fatality, but it was a very intense call, and sometimes the words you would usually use seem to be lost. This was a tough call... But seeing a journalist use it where it's there for everyone to read just doesn't seem right, but that's just my opinion.

I hate the way they say the person is dead. Surely they are smart enough to say it in a more professional manner but then again maybe not. If that was my family member that would be very upsetting to read that as it was written. Have a heart people.

The AP style is to use "dead", "death", "died" when describing things like this. I don't know what would be more 'professional.' --Joe

I can't tell you how to write, sir, I know you are going to have your own style and so forth, but maybe even the driver has died... Or had passed is a little easier to stomach than how it was worded. I'm not a sensitive person, and usually it doesn't bother me how things are worded, but this one got me.

I am sick of everyone couching their language in a PC fashion. There is nothing wrong with using the word "dead". It has the same meaning as: deceased, succumbed to injuries, fatality.
When did use of the word 'dead' become brutal? Quibbling over the use of the word 'dead' in a news publication is ludicrous!
