San Angelo, TX—The San Angelo Central Bobcats had a strong defensive performance headed by senior cornerback Gage Smith who led the team to a decisive 36-10 victory over Byron Nelson.
Central Head Coach Brent Davis said his defense "played unbelievable, our run defense was unbelievable, and then we had some turnovers.”
Gage Smith led the Bobcat defense with two interceptions on the night, which helped shut down the Byron Nelson offense.
The only touchdown for Byron Nelson came late in the second quarter on a deep 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Nicholaus Santini to Noe Diawaku with 2:25 remaining in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff Central answered right back with a 77 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Otto Haynes putting the Bobcats ahead 19-7.
Central capitalized on another stalled drive by Byron nelson with a 20 yard touchdown pass from McIvor to Barron putting Central up 26-7 with 1:18 left in the half.
The half would end with Gage Smith recording one of his interceptions to end Byron Nelson's drive.
Central got off to a slow start but really turned things up in the second quarter. Barron was a strong option at running back while Maverick McIvor proved he can stay in the pocket to make deep passses and scamble when necessary.
Offensively Coach Davis stated that “we got to stop turning the ball over, that is something we don't do. We had two last week, I don't know three tonight. We got to stop doing that."
The Central offense only scored twice in the second half with a field goal by Smith and a touchdown run by Bobby Pena.
The Central defense looks strong going into the season with Coach Davis pointing out the how impressive they looked. McIvor will have to gather the offense for the coming week to improve on their turnover situation.
Despite turnover issues the Bobcats have a lot to be optimistic about going into the coming weeks.
Central will host Kerrville Tivy for homecoming at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.
