Lake View Trounced in Season Opener

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Lake View Chiefs were dealt a crushing blow in their season opener as the Andrews Mustangs laid down a 75-21 beating at San Angelo Stadium on Friday night

Andrews threw the first punch with the combination of quarterback Jace Keesee to Noah Lujan for a Mustang touchdown. This duo would only progress to become more dangerous throughout the night.

On the next Andrews possesion, Britain Garcia got his hands on the ball and made a quick burst to the end zone, but, before crossing the plain, the ball was knocked loose. A fellow teammate in the mix managed to secure the ball, adding another touchdown for the Mustangs.

Keesee with a rocket of a ball up the middle to meet Alfredo Rodriguez who would get tight grips on the pass and  bring about the Mustangs next touchdown.

With the momentum rolling for Andrews, Vito Prieto notched an interception for the Mustangs. The pass was intercepted by Prieto before the intended receiver could even be discovered. After picking off Chiefs’ quarterback Henry Nickias, Prieto took it to the house himself.

Two more Mustangs touchdowns were to follow; one on a completed pass to Marc Solorzano and the other a carry by Casey Buck. Bringing the score to 41-0 Mustangs due to one missed extra point attempt.

Still fighting back, the Chiefs finally punched one in as Nickias lofted a deep ball to Louis Perez who brings it in and picked up a block up the middle by his teammate to finish the play out with the first touchdown of the night for Lake View.

Andrews would answer yet again with a touchdown by Garcia, his second and final of the night.

Lake View, now with heads raised, got the ball to Joseph Brooks who glided into the end-zone untouched after receiving a pass from Nickias.

The final touchdown of the first half went to Noah Lujan of the Andrewe, who leapt at the left front edge of the end-zone and managed to keep his feet in and pushing the score to 55-14 Mustangs.

Quick out of the gates of the second half, the Mustangs put up another seven. Preito is on the end of Keesee’s pass and is successful from just a few yards out with 10:03 on the clock.

The two teams went scoreless for some time until the Mustang’s kicker was successful from 36 yards out with 5:45 left in the third quarter bringing the score to 65-14 Mustangs.

Keesee could not be stopped, his accuracy was unmatched. He completed another touchdown pass, but this time to Nehemiah Flores at the two-and-a-half minute mark and a widened 72-14 scoreline in favor of the Mustangs.

The Chiefs would break free of the reigns of the Mustang defense once more, as Nickias was able to connect with Perez. The ball was seemingly out of reach when Perez kicked it into high gear and got under it in time. Perez rushed another 20 yards or so to finish the play and rack up six for his teammates with 1:13 seconds left in the third quarter, narrowing the Mustang lead to 72-21.

In the fourth quarter, the only points came from Andrews after a stalled drive resulted in a soaring field goal that came from the 42 yard line.

Toward the end of the game Andrews put in a new quarterback, Tyler Luna. Luna did not let the play drop off. But, in the final drive of the game, the Mustangs assumed victory formation to run out the clock..

Andrews’ defense kept the Chiefs pretty locked up all game. Marcos Bustamante was a big hitter on defense making key plays, as well as being able to advance the ball in crucial moments on offense. Bustamante and Keesee were key in tonight's matchup. 

Nickias showed his ability to make plays when the Chiefs needed him and Royce Garcia was busting out the seams of every kick return he could get his hands on

“Growing pains, we adopted a new system so, that’s not an excuse. We just have to execute,” said new Lake View head coach Hector Guevara.

Lake View (0-1) will now travel to Fort Stockton High School to take on the Panthers Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
