MIDLAND, TX — A former Ector County Sheriff Deputy has been issued a fifteen-month sentence in federal prison for extortion.
Oscar Limon, 47, will pay a $13,200 fine and perform 100 hours of community service as part of his sentence. He will also be placed on three years' supervised release after completing his prison term.
The U.S. Department of Justice told Newswest9 that Judge Junell ordered Limon surrender within 60 days to federal authorities to begin serving his prison term.
On May 11, 2017, Limon pleaded guilty to one count of Hobbs Act extortion under color of law, or affecting commerce by extortion.
The Hobbs Act prohibits actual or attempted robbery or extortion affecting interstate or foreign commerce "in any way or degree."
He admitted that during his term serving as an Ector County Sheriff's deputy between Jan. 2010 and June 10, 2016, he extorted over $13,000 from several Odessa game room owners in exchange for protection for their game rooms. Limon also provided information about law enforcement actions that would affect gaming operations
“This sentence sends a clear message to law enforcement who choose to break the laws they were sworn to uphold,” said Waldemar Rodriguez, special agent in charge of HSI El Paso, in a press release. “HSI special agents will continue to build strong relationships with our law enforcement partners to hold individuals in positions of public trust to the highest of standards.”

It's a sad psychological manifestation that affects some folks in positions of authority...Plain old fashioned greed and thinking they can hide it putting on that face of honor and respect that comes with a police job.It seems like just a matter of "it was a thing" he thought he could get away with and thought he could cover with his position ....Plain old opportunism and the greed that come with convincing himself it was no "big deal" .His true error was in self deception that he could get away with by taking advantage of his previous honor and respectability of his status. He found out( and my faith in our legal wheels earns a bright shiny penny for his being fronted out for me for a minute here, too) In that it presents a standard of conduct that will no longer be tolerated in those we must teach our children to look up to and give all respect for the example they hold in our society.I give him credit for "fessing up", and a man of his age, experience, and knowledge of a higher level of right and wrong, surely made a conscious deliberate choice to take advantage of a situation he thought he could get by with and for the easy chance for some easy money. It is sad that his own self respect and decency are shamed for him in a deeply personal and judicious manner.Im sure his own shame and regret are more of a punishment than legal punishment. He ruined his life, for what? A little sneaky cash.I suggest some therapy or pastor counseling.I am very curious as to what led to his being exposed? What and who are the particulars here that turned him in? They say "Physician, heal thyself" well I say, Authority figures and police officers, don't allow any individual to knock down the honor and respect with which so many if you uphold and put your lives in the line for every day....Not for a little extra sneaky cash..Not worth it in so many ways.
