Walmart Shooting Suspect Deceased

A close family member of 42-year-old Charles D. Welborn has confirmed his death as of approximately 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. 

Welborn was shot three times on Monday after having stolen a rifle at the north side Walmart, where he also claimed to have a bomb.

When police arrived, Welborn did not comply with orders to get on the ground and show his hands, and charged police with a broken bottle, according to police. Three shots were fired on Welborn, who then received first aid from officers until SAFD medics arrived on scene and transported the man to Shannon Medical Center.

Acoording to the family member, Welborn underwent multiple surgeries, but died a day after the incident in hospital. 

Local law enforcement have confirmed his death.

Welborn was transported from Shannon Medical Center to Lubbock, Texas for Autopsy.

The investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers.

We now know that he didn't shoot anyone. At the time law enforcement encountered him he was a shooting suspect who had pointed a stolen firearm at store employees. Would you prefer "Walmart thief dies"? I suspect not, since he also claimed to have a bomb. "Walmart thief/terrorist dies"?...no, that won't do because he didn't actually have a bomb, did he? How about "Walmart maniac dies"?...no, that won't do because, since it was at the northside Walmart, it isn't specific enough, right? The headline works fine for me...let it go.

...you let it go, Sparky? If Chelsea chooses to respond, that's fine. If not, my point is valid. The guy was never a "shooting suspect", and certainly wasn't at the time this was written. Now that we know about this fellow's troubled past, and that it was suicide-by-cop, I would think being accurate in his description is the least we can do. The only "shooting suspect" is the SAPD officer who fired 3 rounds into Mr Welborn, who I'm certain will be cleared by the Texas Rangers of any wrongdoing, and/or no-billed by a grand jury. The next time you consider correcting my comment with a comment, save us both the time. I'm not interested. Thanks though...

When the call first went out for assistance it was dispatched as a shots fired call. To all officers that went to the scene (and there were many that flew past my office so I looked up the live call request log from the SAPD site), this was a shooter. He was a high priority threat. I am sad for his family and for the officer who has to live knowing he took this man's life. Nit-picking about an article's title when you don't seem to hold all the facts yourself is rather petty in the whole scheme of things.

For the man who had no choice when a jacked-up lunatic was endangering people in a nice store on a nice day: May he/she have peace. I'm very grateful for the sacrifices our officers make. And I have no sympathy or sadness for this dead criminal.

FYI, a friend who works in the store said the HAMMER against the glass DID sound like shots, so perhaps whoever called 911 indicated such....it was the crazy acting and threats outdoors that drew fire upon this criminal, and he wanted it, he knew what he was doing. Suicide by cop. I have no sympathy for the dead dude.

Its all very sad and I pray he finds peace now nobody can judge or know exactly what he was thinking im happy nobody was hurt at wal mart
