SAN ANGELO, TX – Early Saturday morning, a San Angelo woman was killed and her 16-year-old son severely injured in a collision with a semi near Midland.
According to Texas DPS, Rose Mary Contreras, 43, of San Angelo was driving west on TX 158 towards Midland. Her son, Josiah Contreras, 16, was her passenger in a 2008 Mazda CX9.
Meanwhile, a 2001 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi trailer was eastbound. Driving it was 54-year-old Adalberto Almanza of Euless.
DPS reported that the Freightliner was traveling at an unsafe speed for the wet road conditions. It was raining.
The Freightliner hydroplaned and crossed into the westbound lanes in front of Ms. Contreras’ Mazda. Unable to stop or maneuver out of the way in time, the Mazda struck the semi. As a result of the collision, the semi trailer detached from the Freightliner tractor and came to a rest facing north across the westbound lanes. The truck itself ran into the north barrow ditch facing west.
The approximate location of the crash:
The Mazda came to a rest facing east, also in the north barrow ditch.
Josiah suffered incapacitating injuries, DPS reported. Midland County Justice of the Peace Billy Johnson pronounced his mother dead at the scene.
The crash happened at 12:19 a.m. Saturday morning on TX 158 about 12 miles east of Midland.

PermalinkThis accident occurred in the early afternoon, not early AM as this article states. There were two fatal accidents this day. Both involving Semi's. I believe the news media have both mixed up or are NOT aware there were 2 accidents.
