SAN ANGELO, TX - The San Angelo Police Department officials said today that Police Service Dog Duke helped officers with a narcotics bust during a traffic stop at Howard and Houston Streets at around 9:00 p.m. last night.
Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez said Duke was requested to the scene to conduct an open-air “sniff” around a silver-colored 2002 Ford truck that had been stopped on a traffic violation. Mr. Duke alerted officers to a backpack resting against the inside of the truck’s bed and the driver’s door.
"When police searched the backpack and vehicle, they located drug paraphernalia, a non-functioning revolver, and several small bags that contained suspected narcotics," said Gonzalez. "The contents of the bags field-tested positive for methamphetamine. Police also seized power tools believed to be stolen property."
The driver, 46-year-old Ronald Joseph Allison, was arrested for 1st Degree Felony Manufacture Delivery of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 1, and a passenger, 31-year-old Stephen Pace Friend, was arrested for 10 outstanding city warrants. Both men were transported to the Tom Green County Jail without incident, said Gonzalez.

Of course the police know the law better than myself (hopefully)...but I was under the impression the Supreme Court ruled it was unlawful to request a drug dog to a traffic stop without any probable cause. Of course, there could have been probable cause that just wasn't reported in the article, but it reads as if the drug dog was called to the scene of a basic traffic stop, which I'm pretty sure is now illegal.

PermalinkHere's a link to what I'm referring to: http://www.dailydot.com/layer8/supreme-court-police-drug-sniffing-dogs/ Also, I wanted to add, meth is damaging our community and I'm glad these guys were arrested...we just need to ensure things like this are done legally.
