Texas Gas Prices Dip to $2.79 Ahead of Record Memorial Day Travel

SAN ANGELO, TX — Gas prices across Texas have dropped slightly ahead of the Memorial Day weekend, with the statewide average for regular unleaded fuel sitting at $2.79 per gallon, according to AAA Texas’ Weekend Gas Watch. That’s down two cents from last week and 39 cents less than a year ago.

San Angelo drivers are paying about $2.82 per gallon — a 23-cent jump from last week, but still 32 cents below the price at this time last year. Among the surveyed metro areas, the Waco area reported the lowest average at $2.60, while Dallas and Fort Worth recorded the highest at $2.95.

Nationally, gas prices are holding steady at $3.19 per gallon, 42 cents lower than this time last year. This marks the lowest average price for Memorial Day weekend travel in Texas since 2021, when the average was $2.71 per gallon, according to AAA Texas.

The dip in prices comes as a record 3.2 million Texans are expected to travel at least 50 miles for the holiday.

“Supply and demand are playing a role in this year’s lower pump prices as crude oil supply is currently surpassing demand,” said AAA Texas spokesperson Daniel Armbruster. “Texas drivers have not seen fuel prices this low for Memorial Day since 2021.”
