AUSTIN, TX — It's never easy representing a city alone. It's even more difficult on a stage like the 2025 Texas High School State Track Meet. Lake View's Kentrell Johnson handled that pressure with ease on Thursday, May 1, and made his city proud.
The young man placed 4th overall in the 200-meter with a 21.30-second sprint on Thursday. He finished .01 seconds outside of a podium finish.
Johnson seemed happy and a bit frustrated after his race.
"I have room to improve because I got 4th," Johnson said. "I was really hoping to get top three, but it just shows me that I have more room for improvement. I'm feeling good right now."
That humble answer is exactly why this young man will be back here next year going for gold.
"Since I'm just a junior, I have another year left," Johnson said. "It gives me room to improve next time, and to be sure that this isn't the fastest time I'll ever have. But I know I can get faster."
Hear from Johnson after his race below:
Johnson finished behind Lindale's Chad Ward (21.30), Camrin Jackson from Dallas Kimball (21.20), and Lago Vista's Swayde Griffin (21.15).
While Johnson said himself that he was disappointed that he did not make the podium, he's excited he still has one more year to improve. However, the young man made his city proud on Thursday. His 4th place finish cemented him as one of the fastest speedsters in Texas.
"Being the only San Angelo Athlete holds me to a very high standard," Johnson continued. "I want to show (everyone) that there's a lot to come."
Congratulations are in order for the junior from Lake View and all of San Angelo looks forward to what he can do in the future.
