Ceremony Marks Expansion of I-27 Toward San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — An I-27 signage ceremony Monday marked the first physical step in the interstate’s southward expansion toward San Angelo.

The 4.2 added miles extended I-27 along FM 1585 south of Lubbock.

Among those in attendance were Senator Ted Cruz, former U.S. Representative and Senator Kent Hance, U.S. Representative Jodey Arrington, San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter, former San Angelo Mayor Alvin New, San Angelo City Council representatives Karen Hesse Smith and Lucy Gonzales, and Ports-to-Plains Alliance President Lauren Garduno.

The Texas Department of Transportation and the Ports-to-Plains Alliance hosted the event to celebrate the key step in expanding the Ports-to-Plains corridor.

The Ports-to-Plains corridor will be designated as I-27 and run from Lubbock to Big Spring, down to San Angelo and then on to Del Rio and Eagle Pass.

The Ports-to-Plains System in Texas is expected to be a 963-mile corridor that will connect four interstates, 24 state highways and 17 U.S. highways to enhance rural connectivity across the state.
